McDonald's franchisees say the company's all-day breakfast launch has been a nightmare. The new menu is slowing down service, reducing average ticket costs, and causing chaos in the kitchens, franchisees told Nomura analyst Mark Kalinowski in a new survey.
"In small stores, the problems are vast with people falling over each other and equipment jammed in everywhere," one franchisee wrote in response to the survey.

Yeah, but now I can eat my Steak, Egg, and Cheese Biscuits morning, noon, and twice at night.
That grease sure feels good runnin’ down your chin.
It’s not actually that much more expensive. With Bigmacs now running nearly $5 on average they aren’t competing on price much anymore. Especially at the quality difference. The difference between a Smashburger and a Bigmac is about 50 cents and at Smash you get a bigger burger with better ingredients in a more relaxed atmosphere with better fries on the side and beer on the menu. An entire meal at Smash might cost you $2 more and you won’t come out of the building feeling rushed or shameful for having eaten crap.
Low cost adequate quality isn’t cutting it anymore. Or more specifically the definition of adequate quality has risen above what McD’s serves.
WMT has always been riding a razor thin margin. Eventually pennies just won’t get pinched anymore.
A company needs to recognize when their value discipline is no longer within the market. McD was considered a flag ship of crappy food back in the 80s, but people put up with it for the speed and the cost. America’s relationship to food changed a LOT in the 90s, even more in the 00s, and is still changing this decade. Plus there’s the long term image damage, anybody under the age of 45 doesn’t remember a time when McD’s food wasn’t generally considered bad. That hurts.
I’m not sure the buyout thing works anymore. There’s too much information too readily available. McD’s bought Boston Market and that brand began to immediately suffer when people assumed the food quality was going to drop. They didn’t actually mess with the menu at all, but McD has the reputation and people made assumptions. So they sold it. McD has yet to seriously address what the market thinks they are.
I think MCD bought Chipotle too. They left it alone and its doing pretty well.
They are buying companies overseas too. This is one of the issues - it’s a big boat. Turning it is expensive.
It’s that “everything is already made” part. They use completely different stuff to make it and store it, and there’s more of it. Breakfast at McD’s has about twice as much “stuff” as lunch, and most of the grill areas were designed to just barely fit the breakfast load, there’s not enough room to have both side by side.
Making things from scratch would actually reduce the equipment load.
I've wondered the same thing - I see most of their commercials cater to blacks, so I assume that is their core market.
I haven't eaten there in years - don't care for "fast-food" - if I must I'll hit a deli (or a Subway) for a sandwich.
They divested out of Chipotle before they sold Boston Market.
“They say Obamas a failure.”
Obama isn’t a failure. He’s achieving exactly what he’s set out to do. Destroy the country. “Fundamentally changing it” as he put it.
Now we live in a fairly small community, but the boys' observations of it being "ghetto" seem to have some merit, at least locally.
I can't see how they can sustain that indefinitely.
They are only offering about 4 breakfast items on the menu. You can’t get everything they have for breakfast. So I don’t know how it’s such a hardship. The pancakes, McMuffins just get tossed in the microwave. I just don’t get how this is so difficult. Personally I’m delighted with the new breakfast all day options. I love egg and cheese sandwiches.
However, I am going to White Castle now that does all breakfast items all day long. They have egg and cheese, extra for bacon, etc. sandwiches on real wheat toast for $1.99. Yummmm. Plus you can get waffles with strawberries & whipped cream, or with syrup. Cheaper than McD’s and better tasting. I must say though that McD’s new chocolate muffin is one of the most delicious muffins I’ve ever had from a fast food joint. It’s so good. A must try.
They were only in certain parts of the country but they were great.
They were also only certain parts of the chicken. And remember, parts is parts.
The sign on the door said “Open 24 Hours” but the door was locked.
I yelled at the guy in the store “Aren’t you open 24 hours?”
The guy said “Yeah, but not in a row.”
They promised us hash browns, and they gave us hashtags.
Thanks, my dear, it’s been working for me for years! MickeyD’s wants too much for what they give. Tasty, but poor value for money. Then again, I’ve been called a giant tightwad. Like Scrooge McDuck...
They microwave everything now.
On a recent trip, I stopped at a McD for coffee at 1100 am.
While waiting for a fresh pot, 5 customers asked for a breakfast item and were turned down. They walked out. Lost business.
They only need to offer breakfast after 10:30AM in urban areas. Refusing to serve breakfast after 10:30 is clearly racist.
There are no White Castles in my area-—but it sounds like a good deal.
.
The test market was San Diego, beginning last April. Not sure the results, but sounds like McD’s rushed the nationwide rollout too fast. Jack in the Box does have b-fast all day, but their items look & taste much worse if ordered outside of usual b-fast hours.
$2.88 Egg McMuffin doesn’t seem all that cheap to me.
Breakfast at all hours has been smooth here, though; haven’t seen any problems at all.
