From all the accounts I have read Joe McCarthy was mostly correct in his accusations of those accused of being Communists and Foreign Agents, they just didn’t like having it pointed out.
The Communist infiltration of the Democrat party was true then and true today.

Everyone assumes that McCarthy convened committee hearings to smear people as being communists. Actually the Tydings committee was convened by Sen. Millard Tydings to force McCarthy to name the alleged communists and fellow travelers in the State Dept. It was McCarthy who was in the hot seat. And Tydings basically considered a denial as proof that someone wasn't a communist. The commies would deny being commies, and Tydings would thank them and then apologize for taking up their time.
Most of the government employees, elected representatives and lobbyists could be rationally be named “foreign agents.” They advocate for and pursue foreign interests over American interests. Those to advocate to overthrow our government and replace it with a global government are foreign agents. In most cases they are Marxists.
