One Size Fits All
December 23, 2015
Whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
Like most children, I thoroughly enjoyed Christmas. With great anticipation, I would snoop under the tree to see what toys and games awaited my eager grasp. So I felt deflated when I started getting things like shirts and pants. Grownup gifts were no fun! Then last Christmas, my kids gave me some cool socks with bright colors and designs. I almost felt young again! Even grownups could wear these socks, as the label reassured me: âOne size fits all.â
That welcome phrase âone size fits allâ reminds me of the best gift of Christmasâthe good news that Jesus is for everyone. The point was proven when the first invitation sent by angel choirs was to shepherds on the bottom rung of the social ladder. The news was underscored further when the VIPsâthe wealthy and powerful Magiâfollowed the star to come and worship the Christ-child.
After Jesus began His ministry, an influential member of the Jewish ruling council came to Him at night. In the course of their conversation, Jesus invited âwhoever believesâ to come to Him. The simple act of faith in Christ grants eternal life to those who trust in Him (John 3:16).
If Jesus were just for the poor and marginalized, or only for the famous and fortunate, many of us would not qualify. But Christ is for everyone, regardless of status, financial situation, or social standing. He is the only gift truly fit for all.
Thank You, Lord, that no one is unqualified for the gift of Your love. Teach us to rejoice in the fact that Your love was just right for us, and help us to share that love with others.
Godâs gift to a dying world is the life-giving Savior.
As a Pharisee, Nicodemus was a religious conservative who was part of the upper echelons of the nationâs spiritual leadership (v. 1). This visit with Jesus had a profound impact on Nicodemus. When the religious leaders began to discuss Jesus as a threat, Nicodemus came to His defense (John 7:50). When Jesus was crucified, Nicodemus assisted Joseph of Arimathea in the Saviorâs burial (19:39). The one who began his spiritual journey by coming to Jesus âby nightâ (3:2) ended up with a public witness of his connection to Christ.

Happy Wednesday, all!

Fillet of Sol
The sun slants in, its light a wedge
Of carpet by the door.
And to that slice of sunlight
Goes my cat, now, to restore
Herself. This nap is therapeutic
(Like the tuna she devoured).
She seems to need this daily bask.
She thinks she's solar powered.

Your poem reminded me of an incident in my childhood.
Our morning was pierced by a knock-down, hair-pulling, screaming fight between my younger brother and sister. He was yelling, "NO!!! IT'S A ROAD!!!!!! FOR MY CARS! IT'S A ROAD!!!"
She was yelling,"NO!!!! IT'S A STAGE!!!! FOR MY BARBIES!!!! IT'S A STAGE"
Upon investigation we found out that Tommy and Janet were fighting over a sunbeam that made a line on the living room rug. When the fight was over, the Sunbeam was too!
This is one of our family stories now!

Christmas Mystery
December 24, 2015
The mystery from which true godliness springs is great.
1 Timothy 3:16
As Charles Dickensâ story A Christmas Carol begins, there is mystery surrounding Ebenezer Scrooge. Why is he so mean-spirited? How did he become so selfish? Then, slowly, as the Christmas spirits marched Scrooge through his own story, things become clearer. We see the influences that changed him from a happy youth into a selfish miser. We observe his isolation and his brokenness. As the mystery is solved, we also glimpse the path to restoration. Concern for others pulls Scrooge from his self-absorbed darkness into a new joy.
A far more important mystery, and one much harder to explain, is that which Paul spoke of in 1 Timothy 3:16: âBeyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great: He appeared in the flesh, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory.â Extraordinary! God âappeared in the flesh.â
The mystery of Christmas is how God could become man while remaining fully God. It defies human explanation, but in the perfect wisdom of God, it was the plan of the ages.
âWhat child is this?â He is Jesus ChristâGod revealed in the flesh.
This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the babe, the son of Mary. Traditional carol
God made His home with us so that we might make our home with Him.
The mystery of Christmas is that Jesus came to us as God in the flesh. Those who believe in Him are called the body of Christ, the church. Paul uses various metaphors to describe it. In 1 Timothy 3:15 he refers to the church as âGodâs household.â He is saying that God is our Father, Christ is our brother (Heb. 2:11-12), and we are Godâs children (John 1:12; Gal. 3:26). Because our Father is the God of truth (John 3:33), because Jesus is the truth (14:6), and because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth (15:26), the church is âthe pillar and foundation of the truthâ (1 Tim. 3:15).
