labeling of food for one...IIRC, border crossings, inspections. Probably a lot more that hasnt been reported. I think it wont take much to break NAFTA.

I guess it doesn’t mean anything to you folks NAFTA was an accomplishment of Ronald Reagans

So was amnesty for illegals. So, no, it doesn't mean a damn thing to me.

He has to come out on where he will find money on all of these tax cuts. Yes some will come from welfare reduction and illegals being evicted.

Bringing jobs back to the US, and in doing so creating US tax payers to pay into our military and space program rather than Chinese tax payers to pay into theirs, will help too.

So was amnesty for illegals. So, no, it doesn't mean a damn thing to me.

The amnesty Reagan signed was presented as a one-time fix for the problem of illegal aliens that would be prevented in the future with strict enforcement of the law.

His signing of the bill was no approval of any ongoing policy of amnesty for illegals, but intended to be a one-time fix. And we all know what's happened since.

Right. And NAFTA was a promise of a thriving economy to come and decreased trade deficits. And we all know what’s happened since.

It does sound like Trump gets it on the regulation end (which is very good), but I’m really interested in what he thinks of the way organized labor has DESTROYED our manufacturing base. As I pointed out yesterday, the manufacturing base of the US Northeast and Midwest was GONE long before NAFTA existed. The unions, mainly, destroyed it.

There isn't enough organized labor left to affect anything...And what there is left has been severely handicapped with lower wages and benefits...

The unions built the middle class of America...Did that put a lot of American companies out of business...Nope...But it did give those employees cash to spend...That allowed new businesses to start up all over the Country...Did companies move to Southern states to increase their profits??? Yep...Some did...

It's all a matter of balance...

You didn't mention the elimination of the anti-trust laws which allows companies to merge and control any competition which results in maximum profits for those merging companies...

Getting every American blue collar worker on welfare (even while he/she has a job) is not the solution I'm looking for...

"I think that high tariffs have been tried...it was a leading factor of the Depression."

No it wasn't. We had high tariffs the first 180 years of this country and it served us well. We entered the Roaring 20's with tariffs of about 20%. The smoot-hawley tariff wasn't passed until 1.5 years after the depression.

At the time imports were equal to 5% of our GNP and exports were 4% of GNP. Exports simply weren't big enough to have a major impact on our economy. Industrial production dropped 50% during the Great Depression. Exports just weren't significant in that number.

Tariffs in United States History

Today imports are equal to 16% of our GNP. We are way too dependent on foreign countries for manufactured goods and even military parts.

Our tariffs are so low that they actually provide a tax incentive to off shore, as if the wage differentials were not enough. The price of those cheap imports don't reflect the taxes that domestic producers contribute, the cost of supporting unemployed Americans, or the opportunity cost of not having Americans working earning salaries, paying taxes and spending their earnings into our economy.

Thank you for that information. I did only a cursory look around the internet as my time is short this evening. It seems there are mixed opinions.

I’m still not comfortable in my mind about raising tariffs. As much as I don’t like it, in this time of global economics, I am not sure about the consequences of such an action. In earlier days, we had a nation that produced for ourselves and other nations. That no longer is the case. Would high tariffs cause business owners to relocate back to the US? Not unless the corporate tax is restructured, the unions are reigned in and fed control is loosened. Companies can still make a profit, even with a high tariff.

And I appreciate your answer. I forgot the sarcasm tag when I posted my original question.

Trump is an entrepreneur. I applaud him...no matter where he does business. That is completely up to him. Just as other companies are free to do business where they choose to.

The way I see it...Trump went overseas to make money in many cases. I have no problem with that. Other companies have done the same. He could have stayed in the US and provided jobs, tax revenue, etc. as well as they could. (and yes, I know he has US companies and a base...just like the others.)

He is coming across like a hypocrite and demagogue, at least to me.
