Kentucky Clerk In Gay Marriage Dispute Switches to the Republican Party

A county clerk in Kentucky who was briefly jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples said on Friday that she and her family have switched to the Republican Party because the Democrats no longer represented them.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis, 50, who has said her beliefs as an Apostolic Christian prevent her from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, said they had changed parties last week. She was a long-time Democrat in eastern Kentucky.

"My husband and I had talked about it for quite a while and we came to the conclusion that the Democratic Party left us a long time ago, so why were we hanging on?" she told Reuters in an interview at a hotel in Washington, where she has traveled to be feted at a Family Research Council event later on Friday.

Davis also said she did not foresee a problem with the current marriage licenses being issued by her office in Morehead, Kentucky. Critics have charged the altered licenses, which removed her name and title and the name of the county, violate an order issued by U.S. District Judge David Bunning and raise questions about their validity.

"I don't think there should be much of an issue and the judge didn't have any problem accepting the licenses that were issued when I was incarcerated, which had been altered, so I don't see that there should be an issue," she said.

Davis added, however, that if the new licenses became an issue for Bunning, she was prepared to return to jail.

I guess she is an infiltrator now.

“Nor was it far too many ‘conservatives’ on Free Republic.”

I just pinged one who referred to her as a “hay-seed hag”.

Unfortunately, that will now be the criticism. “She’s a plant! No, wait, she’s an infiltrator! No! She’s doing one of those double-cross thingies I’ve read about in a spy novel!”

Not surprising as she’s been all over the place in her personal life.

Just FYI, that is a different denomination that you are referring to. Davis belongs to a Pentecostal Apostolic Church, not the ACCA which you are referring to. Davis’s church is not related to the ACCA, and in fact the ACCA does not have any churches in Kentucky.

Just search for Davis on wikipedia, you can find out more about her denomination there.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I defended Kim Davis here, on Twitter and elsewhere and never said anything about her party.

Why would you not want to register Republican so that you can vote for a conservative in the primary? Unless your state allows crossing party lines.

I was talking about JEDI4S. When Mort mentioned you, I didn’t realize Jedi Jones was a screen name. I thought it was a generic reference to the other FReeper with Jedi in the name. I’m still kind of a newbie and should have been more thorough. Besides, I was in heavy traffic on I-40 and didn’t have my reading glasses. ;) Sorry if I added to the confusion.

Those who turn to alcohol abuse, cheat on their spouses, discover their homosexuality, lose their religion, become too lazy to work, etc, etc, etc ... evolve into "democrats". Those making a sincere effort to clean up their act and lose those bad habits ... evolve into "republicans". Those who study history and recognize the "elite" republicans are actually democrats ... evolve into "conservatives". And, at about that time, they join Free Republic!

Jedi Jones, I apologize. Going from memory for a “jedi” name was obviously a bad idea.

Agreed. To be a GOP is akin to being a demrat. Neither party has claim to being part of the American process. Registered as an Independent would be a far better choice. Don’t allow them to ‘brand’ you.

Sad that this person has gotten more response than the holocaust of genocidal infanticide by Planned Parenthood.

I guess our side may never learn......

Lest we forget.
