Calcium Hypochlorite (pool shock) is sold in a solid granular form and has a 10 year shelf life when stored in a cool, dark place. This will easily meet your long-term storage needs.

The other benefit is the amount of available chlorine. The concentration of chlorine is much higher with Calcium Hypochlorite. For example, a small 1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite can disinfect up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water. That’s around 5 gallons/day for one person for 5 1/2 years! Not bad for only 1 lb of granules.

“It seems that a whole lot of people will die.”

Yeah. I think that’s why they call it SHTF.

But it is something that people don’t think about. Things CAN (and will) get bad. Even for localized events (wildfires, earthquakes, tornados, etc.) it can take a long time for first responders to get there, and to make any progress. I know we like to blame someone (Bush with Katrina, not enough fire-fighters, etc.) - but normal society isn’t able to handle abnormal events without some time delay.

Of course for a widespread event (Ebola, several terroist nukes, EMP, etc.) that will take much longer to get a handle on.

I just had a semi shtf. Just had to go through the Butte Fire in CA. I am still a bit stressed from it but I thank
God I still have my home. Electric was down for a week but I do have an old generator that I connected to my refrigerator with a extension cord. The generator is not connected to the house so my well was not working. I was not allowed to leave the area and come back so I could not buy gas for my generator or buy more water jugs. I thank God also for our firefighters.

I am seriously thinking about getting a new generator that does not cost an arm and a leg and have it connected to the house. I am not sure if I should get a gasoline, diesel or propane one yet. I wonder if any Freepers have any opinions on this.

I have plenty of aluminum water bottles too (can boil water in them). Along with the tin cups of course!

I live in an area with a tiny (one percent) minority population. Plus, almost all of them live in concentrated areas in the nearest "big" city about fifteen miles away from me. Before any of them could get too far to pillage and kill, they'd be shot down by the many non-minority residents who are armed. A lot of people have guns where I live.

It's the people who live in big cities with large populations of gibsmedats who would be in severe trouble. However, if they get to the more conservative (and armed) suburbs, the mobs again will be in big trouble. But that's also assuming there will be a complete breakdown of the authorities.

In the end, I doubt even with a major power breakdown, that mobs will be able to get too far. Even with the major power breakdown, most whites (at least in conservative areas) would band together to help each other and shoot savages of whatever color. I do not see a case where it's every citizen for him or herself.

You die because you are skinny, underweight and have a high metabolism while your fat buddy loses 15 lbs, feels better, and uses your bones to make soup and your skull to make a tureen to serve it in.

What I hate, in my advanced years, is that is a scenario that is even possible if not probable.

What I do is scan in my prescription and email it to canadadrugs.com (they require an actual prescription), and then submit the physical one to my pharmacy (local or mail order). I’ve thus doubled my pills, and pay out of pocket for the Canadian order.

I’ve tried everything I can think of.

My problem is that I can’t eat any plant matter but oats and potatoes.

I react very strongly to ANYTHING else.

It’s a mast cell disorder, not a food allergy, and nobody knows what the trigger is but it’s mostly food connected, although there are things that if I put them on my skin, I’ll react too.

Divine healing is my only option.

In the meantime, I manage the symptoms when I have them.

68% Calcium hypo pool shock is easy to get—any pool store sells it. What you need to avoid is any shock that is “stabilized and/or conditioned.” For water purification make sure the shock does NOT contain cyanuric acid (that’s commonly referred to as “stabilizer.”)

Well, I’m sure I can get a water filter. The stream in back of my house is only intermittent, however.

I’m screwed.
