Labs have a good level head I think they are great too.
Shepherds? Far smarter and quicker.
At one point I had a lab weimaraner cross and he was a real gent of a dog... a prince. Smart too, not as smart as a shepherd.
Shepherds? I think are almost capable of calculus...lol I know they can do 2 plus 2.

My grandfather somehow ended up with an ex WW2 German Sheppard. Great dog. Great with kids. As long as you, and they, understood that it wasn’t ‘Fluffy the wonder poodle’ and was in fact, a killing machine.

Never turned on anyone.

A shepherd can quickly figure out its role and who he is. With children? Like most creatures they know what children are... and yes, the stupid ones should be kept away from children.
Shepherds are VERY smart and very adaptable. I believe they are the smartest of all breeds due to their ability to pick up words and their meaning for a limited vocabulary.

The killer dog shepherds from the war? (Or training?) Still smart enough to know their adopted family during and after retirement from service.

All in all, they are great!

The story I got was a friend of his brought back one of the SS dogs for god knows what reason after the war. Dunno how or why. They had him at a logging camp here and the dog was fine. Gramps ended up getting him from the ex GI and slowly worked him into the family.

It was before my time so I’m gust going by what I was told.

...the officer couldn't take his work partner home because he has a small child.

In law enforcement, this is known as a clue. I Hope Rex finds a good home...

perhaps it isnt the oficer who doesnt want the dog at home. perhaps tis the spouse that has an issue with this. try getting your wife to do something on a scale such as this, that she does not want to do.

Anaheim Police Officer ‘Devastated’ by Shooting of K-9 Partner ‘Bruno’

Days after this photo was posted on the Anaheim Police K9 Association’s Facebook page, Bruno was shot while on duty on March 20, 2014. The caption for this photo stated Bruno was “working double shifts lately – protecting Anaheim residents at work and protecting his new family member at home.”

"You grossly underestimate a german shep’s brains, skills ability to make decisions. After owning three in my life, I believe they are the smartest dog out there. Most dependable companion going. Rest assured in the setting, the dog would accept and love the child. Also? Provide a great guardian for safety."

Agreed.

My sister-in-law and her husband owned a Shepherd for protection. They had to spell words when he was around; he was that smart. And every night, he would go out and do a perimeter check before going to bed.

He was a trained weapon, but with the family, he was a big baby. I remember being there when a repairman visited...he sat on top of my feet, facing the guy and growling, LOL.

I miss that dog.

They aren’t very aerodynamic.

I think “Provide a great guardian for safety” should be amended with an augmentation of “ to the death”.
THAT, by and large, is who they are. That dedicated.

I was two when my dad brought home his new partner. A Malinois.

I was raised with that dog.

The only trouble we had was when a neighbor boy knocked me down and the dog bit him to protect me.

Multiple witnesses saved the dog.

great breed of dog too. I have got Belgian Tervuren and my last was a Belgian too and they are smart , but they need a handler who knows how to deal with them.

I saw Bruno at the Orange County Pet Expo in March 2015. He looked great. He is still into his K9 habit by checking under boxes for things.

“Rex is currently in the custody of Animal Services, and it’s possible he could be euthanized, in part because he’s deemed to be too old to bond and work with a new handler.”

Thanks for the ping. Man, I’d hate to see that beautiful dog killed for no reason other than *they* think he may not be able to bond with a new handler. I’d easily take him on. It’d be great to not have to go through the whole puppy stage. He’d have acres to run at my place and could join me on my daily 5 mile walk. It certainly wouldn’t be very ‘just’ to kill him after all that service he’s provided. Sheesh!
