Here's the Real Reason Why So Many Women are Single
Mic ^ | 09/16/2015 | Kate Hakala

Posted on 09/21/2015 6:14:44 AM PDT by BJ1

"I know lots of single men," Cara, 26, a resident of Brooklyn, New York, told Mic. "It's just... most are of little or no interest to me as anything other than a hookup."

Tired of old ways: The somewhat revolutionary notion that women are actually deciding not to marry is something that wouldn't be possible if the value of marriage itself hadn't changed drastically over the years.

"When women's life choices were highly constrained, they had little negotiating power," Pepper Schwartz, a sociology professor at the University of Washington, wrote for CNN. "They had to marry or were seen as damaged ... It's different now. While most women still want marriage, they don't want it at just any price. They don't want it if it scuttles their dreams."

That, in part, is due to marriage no longer being a must for women's social and financial standing. "I don't think hookup culture is damning for long-term commitment," Lisa, 27, said. "I think it's a response to the large obsolescence of marriage as an institution for women. We don't need to be economically or socially dependent on men."

That carries out through the numbers. Compared to their grandparents' generation, millennial women are significantly more likely to have a bachelor's degree and be a part of the labor force.

"I think a lot of us just don't think marriage is that important because it doesn't offer the security it once did," Norah, 27, told Mic. "It's not as necessary anymore because I can work. I can support myself."

....

It's not that there aren't enough men to explain waning marriage stats — there also aren't enough women who want to walk down the aisle.

What is worse, these are the folks and their sibs who will clean our bed pans with Obamacare, when it is "our" time.....

If that's the case, I'll just sit outside and poop in the yard.

Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit: Matthew 12:31
--By accusing Jesus of being in league with Satan when he was really acting through the power of the Holy Spirit, they had blasphemed the Spirit, hardening their hearts against the Spirit's influence.
-- In Mark's account, Jesus called it an "eternal sin" (3:29). As long as a person persists in this state, genuine repentance is impossible. There is no room in this person's heart for penitence, which is a prerequisite for forgiveness. His sin is unpardonable simply because he is unwilling to travel the road that leads to pardon. The only sin that God is unable to forgive is the unwillingness to accept forgiveness.

Yeah, but for the guys (those guys, anyway), it is a badge of honor. For girls?

I just discovered my wife is my reward to my meanings toil:

Ecc 9:9 Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your reward for all your earthly toil.

I think you missed my point by focusing on the drop out vs the graduate. My intent with those examples was more along the lines of “education and job/career do matter because they impact a person more than just income, so why would any man not give a damn?”.

Drop out vs graduate can be used for college, too, by the way. Lots of people start college and drop out. But again, my point is not about drop outs vs graduates. Rather, it’s what a person does, or does not do, and how they got where they are, are, in my opinion give-a-damn worthy facets of a potential spouse’s life. Again, not because of income, but because it’s a big part of who they are.

I’ll stay out of the feminist discussion. As a happily married, college educated stay-at-home mom who gave up a very fulfilling career to take care of my kid, the house, whatever my husband needs so he can focus on his successful career, I hold an unpopular opinion (at least around here at freerepublic) about the subject.

I grew up working in the hot sun of South Carolina and there was more laughter and general camaraderie among people picking cotton together, even if they didn’t really know each other, than is ever heard now.

Life was hard and we NEEDED each other back then. Don’t worry, those times are coming around again.

My opinion, for what it is worth, is that it is dying without Christ.

“God’s design for marriage and family is best. I suggest reading the Bible and know what He says about it.”

!!! 82 posts before someone mentioned “God” is the answer. His plan, His direction and way of life for mankind. BRAVO!
coming together as companions, hopefully loving and caring for each other and raising children and teaching them the truths of God so that they live might be pleasing to God and thus be ever blessed. Nanny’s might not do it. We know schools do not do it, There is much digression from facts and how to live wisely in this life.

God’s plan is the winning plan and way. Don’t know it?

Buy a Bible and read it! Then believe it!

And I applaud you for that. What a great blessing you will be for him and him for you.

I am a one woman man myself. I had the advantage of being somewhat shielded from the temptation of promiscuity since I met my wife at such a young age.

Just one more reason Hollywood marriages tend to last longer.

A successful marriage requires that at least one of the partners care more about the marriage than about her career.

Could be the man, I suppose, but do women really want a man they have to support? Men don't seem to mind the other way around.

Preferably both would be more concerned with the marriage, of course.

And, on a personal note, neither my wife, nor I, have been particularly career oriented. We both do the best that we know how at our jobs. We're both professionals. But for both of us, family is more important, and we spend time working on our marriage.

Our 42nd anniversary was earlier this month.

What a sad article. I say this as a man who also considers the current state of “manhood” to be just as pitifully sad. Our society just seems to make me very sad lately...

One can find a mate. Thats not in disagreement. (In my experience of being divorced in my 30s and dating into my 40s in a large urban city, there is someone for everybody.) While sexual mores have changed, there still is judgement - and rightfully so. A woman with a high count (ex: multiple devils 3somes would be a red flag) is a proven infidelity risk, backed by studies. In this day and age, with biased laws, a man has to be selective about where he places trust in his resources.

Btw, I do not want to seem argumentative or cantankerous, but why when a woman is asked/confronted about their "number", do they almost without fail, lie and under count it? ("I can count the number of guys I have been with on one hand") Its because of the perceived devalue in SMV.

I naively thought that being a single man in my 30’s, finding a marriageable woman would be easy. In fact, it’s much harder. The single, childless ones are either like the ones in this article or waiting on Mr. Perfect. I’m probably going to have to end up marrying a woman in her 20s. I’d rather not, but the good ones are snapped up then. My experiences with 30 somethings has been horrible.

“Most girls are a combination of overweight, tatt’d to the point of ridiculous,”

Just yesterday I was out walking Buford the CoonHound and saw a rather attractive, young girl that I had not seen before in my neighborhood. Being a red blooded male, I was naturally admiring her beauty. Then as she approached, and got closer, I realized she had a huge nosering and it completely spoiled her beauty....

I couldn’t imagine why a beautiful woman would do that to herself...I mean after all, what is a nose ring if it isn’t simply a tool to lead around a piece of livestock (meat)?

...married 51 years yesterday...

Congratulations!
In reading many of your posts since joining FR, you seem much younger (in a good way.) A good marriage keeps you young at heart.

I am with you. When I think back to the 80’s, there just seemed to be a general mood of optimism. Yes, individual families had struggles, but as a society we sure were a happy lot.

Some of that may be due to my being young and dumb, but it seemed that the older generations seemed happy. Now, we all seem grumpy all of the time....Yep, the more liberty I lose, the grumpier I get..
