She should have hit Nick a few more times.

With a baseball bat.

“I can’t figure why they took Nick.”

"Looks like they are taking anyone who is sick or injured. Maybe because they have a higher risk of dying and turning inside the protected zone."

Yes. It seems the ordinary govt folks like the military grunts are not told that EVERYONE who dies no matter what turns into a zombie - it's not a virus where someone has to be infected first like the soldiers think.

The govt is taking all the high risks to a camp because they may die and turn to zombies. Nick being a heroin addict has a high risk of ODing on drugs for example. I don't know what kind of camp they are taken too - a death camp? Or do they really try and help the people not die but do so in a more of a lock down facility in case they fail to save the patients?

So after 9 days everyone is dead outside the protection zone?

Probably left to fend for themselves? They can't save the inner city. That was also the theme of George Romero's Dawn of the Living Dead movie - the one in the mall. The movie starts off with inner city riots and an attempt to clear out the public housing with high casualty results. So the cops quit, etc.

The Army CO announced they were "infection free" for a six mile perimeter during his speech.

Not that I know anything about it, but...

My guess is that the CO is a petty tyrant, that is using his forces to sweep and scavenge everything locally. That's where the "weekly supplies" are coming from. Also would explain all of the dead bodies - we're assuming that the "ones with guns" were shooting at Zombies. Not necessarily.

First step is to eliminate all the people who might be inordinate drains on resources - medicine especially. "I'm a doctor and I'm here to help!! Show me who's hurt!". Yeah, right. Also might be that there's not much for medical supplies. When Mom stops getting help.... people who love her start getting agitated. Which leads me to step #2...

Second step will be to eliminate the malcontents (we're not there yet).

Final step will be to cut and run once the zombies show up, or all of the local resources are drained. Wouldn't surprise me to see everyone wake up one morning and have the "safe zone" completely devoid of troops. "Where did everyone go? What's happening? etc.

FWIW, Rick, Glenn, Carol, etc would steamroll the people in the "safe zone". Troops and all. Would be like Godzilla vs Bambi.

I find the situation more interesting than what happens to any of the individuals the story is following

I said much the same to my lovely wife during the show last night.

Walking Dead is an interesting character driven show, with zombies as the McGuffin.

Other Zombie movies are more of a "OMG! Zombies! Chase Chase Chase" -type trope, with some scares and blood thrown in.

I like "Fear" because we're presented with some horribly flawed characters. They've no idea what's going on (though we do) and they're trying to figure out ways to cope with it. Not much chasing. Not many zombies. I imagine we'll see more character development, but right now the show is more about the surroundings and events.

You’re right and then they would get out of town ASAP.

Yes to all you said but really they should be more zombies - it just costs too much to higher that many people in make up to pull it off. We have to use our imagination and assume they are being shot as they approach the fence - humans as well as zombies are shot by the soldiers - "Let God Sort Them Out".

But these fortifications will serve as traps. Surrounded by millions of dead as supplies run out.

Everyone that will be allowed to live will have to

not be handicapped in some way (addict, injured, etc.)
not be troublemaker

IMHO

Yup. Season 1 is the setup. Season 2 is the "safe zone" de-evolving, and them escaping from it. Then, we'll go from there.

That's my bet.

I also think that the person signaling is that kid from the school. Wonder if he still has his tiny knife, or if he's found something better? :-)

Oh, and re: medicine and drains on supplies...

Didn't one of the soldiers indicate that all medical supplies were under lock and key, or tightly regulated by someone up the line, or something?

I think that the soldiers are just handing out what's scavenge-able. Makes me wonder where they're getting all their gas for the vehicles.

Ok so what did we learn from this episode?:

1) You got an army holding you hostage and zombies outside. Why not go for a run around the block or go for a lap in the pool.

2) You need medication. Hey no worry, just find a sick patient and steal his.

3) “Hi I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you”. Just remember the National Guard is there to help you with shelter, food, water and sex.

Stay tune for our next lesson next week =)

With this crowd anything can happen.

I’m not watching it closely and am waiting for TWD on Oct. 11.

"Stealing drugs from the sick. Anyone still think Nick is a good guy?"

Not me, but as I said last week, he's still one of the most interesting characters. And sometimes I root for more than just the obviously "good guys."....depending on characterization.

Stealing morphine from a dying man....Nick deserved that beating his mother laid on him. She should have come back for round two.

One thing is for sure, wherever he is being taken won’t result in being babied like Madison has been doing. They’ll probably make him go cold turkey to see if he’ll die just so they can study him when he turns.

He likely won’t die so maybe we’ll get to see the real ZA Nick.

California mindset?

Across the nation we can
have a rural vs urban
mindset. But here in California
we are all of the same mindset?

I was born and raised in rural
California towns. In small town
California the paradigm is similar
to small towns everywhere else
no matter what Hollywood and the
MSM tells you.

4) The Principal Mom & her live-in boyfriend are still pretty self-absorbed and I hope they meet EPIC endings:

Just in this episode:

-Boyfriend ignores his son’s pleas for attention/watch his video.

-Principal’s daughter is back at the dead neighbor’s house, cutting memories into herself. Anyone notice her absence? Nope

-Principal’s son is floating in pool scum, and she thinks it’s peachy: “Here’s your pill, Honey”.

-Principal decides to PAINT her walls. Ummm, what? Yup, denial, denial, denial. How about taking a jog to keep fit, like live-in BF (without the earbuds - really, SHTF in your neighborhood & you wear something to block out sounds of something behind you - who does that?)

-Principal Mom decides to invesigate someone else’s problems outside the safety zone, UNARMED, and by cutting the fence, endangers herself & the entire neighborhood.

-Principal mom has a hissy fit when Ex-Wife goes off with her captured, drug-addled son. A simple mouthed “thank you” would have sufficed. Or “I’ll watch your son like he was my own”. Instead, she gets mad at BF for his ex’s selflessnes. Project much, lady? If it was my ex’s druggie future stepkid, I would have stuck like glue to MY OWN kid, and said “TS to that nonsense, you chose it, YOU deal with it.” Not a shred of gratitude between them. Though Liza made a bad first impression, I respect the heck out of her. She better survive this!
