Who Was the Most Appealing Person in the GOP Debate?
News Machete ^ | 9/17/2015 | News Machete

I'll leave coverage of the substance of the GOP debate to others. I want to talk about the style of the participants--who was the best, most appealing speaker?

Chris Christie spoke too quickly, making himself appear nervous. Perhaps he was nervous, because he was on the verge of being eliminated from the grownups debate.

John Kasich has no eyebrows and his face looks partially melted, making himself look like a space alien. He spoke a lot but he didn't seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Carly Fiorina was forceful and articulate. She also looked stern and had this sour look on her face, like a constantly angry schoolmarm. She almost never smiled or had any warmth in her voice.

Ben Carson reminded me of blind David Patterson, the former Governor of New York who was very soft spoken. He talked about important things, but how can you speak with passion about the dangers of a nuclear Iran when you talk in such a soft tone?

Donald Trump was amusing as always and seemed like a character actor. Not exactly Presidential, more like Peter Falk from Columbo.

Ted Cruz was the best. He looked the camera right in the eye, and spoke with a clear, firm voice that had a sense of urgency.

Rand Paul was not great or terrible, but seemed to whine when he talked about drugs.

Scott Walker wasn't bad but he actually spoke the least in the debate. He has this weird way of staring into the camera with one eye but the other is a little off center making it look like he has a glass eye (which he doesn't.)

They showed Mike Huckabee often from a sideview and it wasn't flattering. He looks severely overweight but he did speak with passion. Marco Rubio spoke with a sense of urgency about foreign policy but there also seemed to be a note of desperation in his presentation.

Jeb Bush was definitely higher energy, but he had this weird habit of moving his head when he talked. As he talked at length I saw his head move left and right, right and left, and left and right like windshield wipers. I suppose he was trying to look at all the audience, but when the most important audience was behind a camera his movements seemed weird.

Overall Ted Cruz was the best. Carly had forceful moments but as I said she was not very likeable. Marco and even Jeb had moments too.

Yup. Probably because he doesn’t have any real place in the polls.

Just one smile would have gone a long way for Carly.

Other than that, she was definitely the adult in the room.

I could never vote for a global warming nitwit or amnesty agent. Congress would pass any kind of crap and would be signed. Both are already costing us way too much in money and freedom.

Right, she knew the questions ahead of time. Why didn’t I figure that out. /sarc

And you want to tell me with a straight face that Trump and the others didn’t interrupt one another for the entire 3 hours?

Lastly, I could care less about the audience - I don’t watch or listen to them, the people on stage and what they said is all the matters — regardless of your preferred candidate(s).

she probably kinew the questions ahead of time ....she was very rude butting in all the time......the audience was stacked with rinos thanks to rove and michael regan...

Funny you should mention that. I was listening to Hewitt's show on my way home that he taped prior to the debate. He was singing the praises of CNN's operation including how their research wonks furnished him with all manner of information based on his debate questions submitted over the past month. He specifically said debate questions, not questions he had about the candidates. I immediately thought of all the times we've said it looks like the other side, be they RATS or RINOs, seems like they have the questions ahead of time. Well, now we know how it's done.

Yet another gun-grabbing surgeon general?

Scott Walker and Ted Cruz. With a close third Marco Rubio.

Did others catch the low fives and friendly pats between Ben Carson and Donald Trump? There’s your Ticket for 2016?
Could be a great idea. What do you think?

You’re from Tennessee—no wonder you thought Christie spoke too quickly.

To your excellent point: “Strong doesn’t mean crude and abusive, but simply firm and determined.”

I’ll get zotted and banned from FR, but Lindsey Graham had a great presentation. He had strong policies toward Isis and an endearing self-deprecating sense of humor.

In spite of all the disrespect for Sen. Graham on FR, take another look at his life story and accomplishments. No one senator can fix Congress - but I believe he would be a great replacement for McConnell.

The Prospective Candidate from new york did not amuse me at all...and in fact e seemed more like a BAD ACTOR..than a character actor

Bad Character Actor is a description that would fit.

Oh, and I’m from the Northeast. That means that even though I agree with Cruz on most positions, that delivery that you especially like is to me oily, over-rehearsed, and especially off-putting.

Yes, but a good Toastmaster knows that warmth is necessary to really win over an audience.

That's Carly. I don't think she will wear well because of that.

She's just not likeable.

Well, there *is* that to consider... so maybe not Carson.

I forget — what was Koop’s position on 2A?
