Washington (CNN)Corinne Cannon had a tough time adjusting to motherhood after the birth of her first child, Jack.
"We were ecstatic to have him, but he was a difficult infant," Cannon said. "He cried pretty much all the time, and it was so emotionally exhausting."
That's an experience many new mothers can relate to. But Cannon knew she had the resources and support to get her through that many families do not have. She felt compelled to help them, so she called local organizations to ask what she could do.
Over and over, the answer she got was "diapers."
Nearly 30% of parents in the United States cannot afford diapers, which can cost up to $100 every month per baby. And it is an expense not covered by food stamps.

We ALL had mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers back into time who managed perfectly without disposable diapers.
Many mothers going back to a generation ago and beyond did not have a washer, much less, a dryer. The diapers were soaked, washed by hand, boiled in big pot, wrung out, and hung out on the line to dry.
Yes, we are in modern times now and lives are different, but cloth diapers can be used at least half of the time to save money if need be. But, the attitude today in many circles is not self sufficiency, but dependence on the government.
Why should FOOD STAMPS cover diapers?
“Problem is, people dont know how to be poor any more”
THIS. Oh so this.
You really don’t need much to get by reasonably well.
Thing is, you need to know how - and welfare has destroyed that knowledge. Give most EBT recipients all the basics they could need (flour, frozen veggies, oil, yeast, frying pan, wood planks, nails, hammer, saw, etc) and they wouldn’t have any idea what to do with it.
How about we just get the govt. and the Fed off people’s backs and bring back small business jobs?
cloth diapers - exactly
Rinse in the toilet , wash with bleach. Pennies on the dollar compared to pampers.
Can’t afford the diapers, DON’T HAVE THE KID!
Nearly 30% of parents in the United States cannot afford diapers, which can cost up to $100 every month per baby. And it is an expense not covered by food stamps. That's because the architects of the Food Stamps program wanted poor women to abort.
What? Are these designer diapers?
I just did a quick look up on Walmart's website and $100 would buy 645 size 4 diapers or 488 size 6 diapers.
Thank goodness.
How about...if you can afford children don’t have them!!!
What did people ever do before disposable diapers????!!!!
Basically, we are going to now see a push by the diaper companies and Wal$Mart and other retailers for the government to pay for diapers.
We need to reduce the food stamp / EBT program down to emergency care boxes. powdered eggs and milk, instant potatoes, gravy, beans and rice, vitamins.
The retail stores and manufacturers are more guilty of the EBT abuse and fraud than the individuals using those cards. There is a TON of taxpayer money those retailers and manufacturers are getting from the excesses of Food Stamp/EBT programs.
give it time
Good advice.
Once filled, they could become a new menu item at Taco Bell. Couldn't be any worse than what they serve now.
There used to be a group of people that would provide cloth diapers for free.
The purpose of this was to prevent:
1. Diapers in Landfills
2. To eliminate the expense of buying disposables
3. To help people realize they don’t need them
Included was training how to use the cloth diapers to show you that if you use these tricks, cloth diapers can work well and not be a huge inconvenience.
They would give you 48 free upon attending a 15m training and a pledge to use cloth diapers primarily.
They used to have diaper pails...probably don’t anymore, but you are right...any large plastic container that could hold water and bleach would do the job. Last thing at night you wash the soiled diapers all together in the washing machine, and get them dry by morning...repeat, and repeat, and repeat for a year plus. My two children were toilet trained at a little over 12 months when disposables were not an option. Think of all the mothers before us who had to stock up on toweling and make the diapers, and then who had to wash them by hand!!!
That's what I did with the first three. When the fourth came I packed it in and went to disposables.
There was a time before disposable, and people figured that out.
First, you empty the load into the hopper. Then you have a diaper pail with a cover to put them in. When the pail is full, you run a load of wash.
Before washing machines there were laundry tubs and a wash board. If you could afford it, you used a hand wringer-roller. There are still people alive who used them.
The air to dry them is free, and a little clothes-line and a box of clothes-pins will do the job. Diapers don't need ironing.
If you're too busy to do it yourself, hire an undocumented alien to wash, cook, make beds, and do the dishes. Your earnings and some of your husband's will cover the cost. /s
The schools provide breakfast for one parent and the child - parents just eat from the child’s tray - and lunch for the child. Government pays for food. So have all the unprotected sex you want. We will pay for everything you need to raise that kid. Screw like crazy tonight. Who cares with whom, they aren’t going to support you. We will, so have fun.
(I’m not opposed to this diaper charity - I love charities - but I hate that NOTHING is left to parents to care for their kids. There should be consequences for random child production.)
