Tribune News Service ^ | 9/5/15 | Mike Ervin

As a person with muscular dystrophy, I’m relieved to know that this will be the first Labor Day weekend of my adult life without a muscular dystrophy telethon. The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced in May that for the first time in decades, it will not organize a telethon to raise money.

Maybe I am weird but I used to enjoy the telethon every year.

This guy is a disability rights advocate.

These type advocates push a lie.

It sort of marked the end of summer, I watched quite a few of them myself.

Recall seeing Dean Martin and Jerry re-unite on the telethon in ‘76 (?). A very touching moment in tv history.

I thought they discontinued it years ago. They’ve just been running a three hour variety show on Sunday nights the past few years.

MDA has helped me, and its research has revealed a lot of new things about a whole range of neuro-muscular diseases. MDA leadership lost its vision in the last few years.

We definitely need to stop treating people with disabilities in this country as though they are disabled.

Jerry Lewis recognized decades before anyone else the coming copper crisis and put up copper collection centers in every convenience store around the country. It was genius. He said he was doing it to find a cure for crippled children. Instead, he stealthily owned the copper market.

After the shabby way the MDA dumped Jerry, they quickly realized how important he was to the broadcast

What was really shabby was that Jerry Lewis only wanted to do one more MDA telethon and then he was going to retire from doing MDA telethons.

The MDA folks wouldn't even give Jerry one last hurrah. They kicked him out and wouldn't let Jerry go out with grace. It just baffles me.

I had to go watch Jerry’s solo jitterbug from “The Nutty Professor.” So silly and funny.

Labor Day is a sort of nothing holiday. The MDA telethon was the biggest Labor Day event for many a year.

About twenty years ago I attended a very elementary sign language class. Can't remember much about it, and there was no local school that taught the full language. The class didn't teach much beyond the rudiments, so I didn't pursue my interest.

When we learned about the numbers of deaf people who want their own children to become deaf or refuse cochlear implants, many of us were outraged.

There was one young adult in the class who had become a paraplegic from a fall while rock climbing. He couldn't believe there were people who were handicapped but refused to be helped or cured. Some crippled/handicapped people are unfortunately a little nutty.

When I was young and Martin and Lewis hit the scene, I was racked with laughter at some of the antics.
Can’t remember anything specific however - - - but that’s my memory.

His act seemed to be largely based on behaving as if he was retarded. I wasn’t impressed or amused.

To each his own

I like RICKLES

My parents did not

It’s not just ideology driven though my dislike of Lewis

Bill Hicks was from the Deep South like me....Mississippi and Alabama

I found him vulgar but hilarious but he was a rare bonafide southern leftist

Martin Short unfunny to me but beloved by many

To each his own

The pre vulgarity comics were funnier cause they had to be

Just watching Henny Youngman and Jack Benny improvise one another or bounce it off Carson

Amazing
U
I saw a younger comic recently.....I’m trying to remember but can’t right now...on HBO

Artie Lange coulda been a contender but he self destructed
