King Cobra On the Loose After Escaping Home in Orlando
NBC Miami ^ | Sep 3, 2015

Posted on 09/03/2015 9:04:42 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Wildlife officials in Florida say they're searching for an 8-foot-long king cobra snake that escaped from a home in Orlando.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Greg Workman says the snake was reported missing Wednesday by its owner.

Officials say the non-native, venomous snake is green and yellow.

Workman says the snake's owner has the proper permit to keep it as a pet and officials say the owner is an experienced snake handler.

Wildlife officials say they've been canvassing the area looking for the snake. Officials warn residents not to approach the reptile if they see it and instead urge them to contact the agency's alert hotline.

Neighbors said Kennedy, who stars in the Discovery Channel TV series "Airplane Repo," has many rescued exotic animals at his ranch. Photos and videos on Facebook show Kennedy with crocodiles, cheetahs and his king cobra.

This photo, posted on Facebook, shows 'Airplane Repo' star Mike Kennedy, of Orlando, with one of his king cobra snakes. Kennedy reported one of his cobras missing Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2015. (Facebook/Mike Kennedy)

Judy Brown and other neighbors who live near the ranch said they were very concerned about a venomous snake getting loose in the woods near their homes.

"Snakes are extremely versatile and extremely good climbers, and so is this one," said Brown. "He's eight feet now, but could grow to 18. When are they going quit looking, and will they find it? I just don't have any confidence they'll find it in that deep woods."

Many years ago.there was a news story about somebody who broke into a house through the bathroom window, saw the guard python wrapped around the shower curtain rod, freaked out, and ran.

I was on a nature trail many years ago in Boiling Springs state park with a pal, came upon some terrified Brownies (little girl scouts) in a clearing.
We had been warned there might be snakes, so we each had a shovel. For the last half of the walk there must have been a snake—a lot of them `wedge-heads’—every few feet.
We got through without anyone bitten, but since then snakes give me the damwillies.
Yeah, moccasins can be aggressive too, but dayum, cobras just look bad.
If you want a good laugh, search youtube for `Jackass, defanged king cobra dropped on Bam Margera’.

I don’t care if someone is a experienced snake handler, the State should make rules for keeping them that are so onerous that no one would ever be endangered. No excuses.

And if a snake does evade the precautions through the handlers negligence or just an act of God like a hurricane, the handler/owner should be criminally liable for any injury or death caused by the snake.

If a damn King cobra got loose and killed my child, I’d be tempted to take the law into my own hands. He’d be praying to make it to trial.

Good for you for rescuing Brownies. Better you than Josh Duggar.

My dog has gotten out of my fenced yard a couple of times; I have gotten her back each time.

She is a chocolate lab. That is a non-venomous species of canine.

I’d love to see him try that with a rattlesnake or another fast strike snake.

Apparently one of their neighbors in FL saw a rattlesnake escape from the Kennedy place after a hurricane in 2008

I have a friend who not only has several types of Cobras and Rattlers, he also has Gaboons.

He says they’re slower to strike than any of his other hots.

And despite the hysterical rants of others, King Cobras are infamously non-aggressive.

In India, the rice paddy workers welcome them as they keep the rodents at bay.

When they spot one ranging too close to their homes, they have officials come and relocate it.

They go out of their way not to harm them.

Some people need to stop getting their “information” from sensationalistic TV shows.
