Reminds me of the 04 hurricane season. I went 15 days w/out power. I used the gas grill for everything. I also had a cheap inverter that I ran off my car battery and it ran the tv and a fan. Ice was hard to come by.

The next year I had a generator and it was a little easier as I could run the fridge. The no a/c thing is the killer down here.

When someone tells me they’d never eat something I just smile. I’ll shove beans in my face right right in front of them. If they get hungry enough they’ll eat it.

If not, they’ll starve and that means more for me and mine.

These are good threads...and useful.

Ignore the party-poopers.

and I highly recommend getting an old style drip coffeepot

I would also recommend a coffee press as an alternative.

I have numerous ways to make coffee. I even have one of these:

As long as I am breathing, I will have coffee.

Can one store bulk beans without the vacuum seal?

My husband and I lived through the Auckland, NZ blackout that lasted 5 weeks. We were living in an apartment on the 8th floor and had a toddler we had to carry up and down the stairs. Thankfully we were able to move to a long stay hotel after about 2 weeks that was literally across the street that still had power. The power company told my husband we should go stay with “rellies” (relatives) in the country. LOL. We were foreigners. That experience was an eye opener on prepping.

I’ve been through enough things that I’m pretty confident I can last for quite a while on my preps between that and my experience living on Pacific islands. My grocery store in Hawaii always had case lots of Spam and toilet paper. Living on Kauai and hearing about people’s experiences with hurricane Iniki inspired me to finally get my Ham license. Their communications were completely cut off for over a month except for Ham radio. The guy that I currently refill my water bottles with lived on a Caribbean island that had to have it’s drinking water shipped in. We just kind of nod knowingly at each other when I drag my bottles in to refill.

Hadn't thought of it that way. Prepping I suppose should involve more than one use for an item. ;-)

I always prep in three. Sometimes when something is critical like water, I prep in four (well, spring, rain, ram pump).

Coffee? That was 5 different backups.

Do it whenever. We are seeing signs that things are coming down. Please continue with your preppers pings and valuable information. Ignore the others, they are not forced to read it, however it will be their responsibility if they are not prepared or at least try to.

Like a quote I heard on the Jim Bakker Show:

It is better to be prepared 1 year early than 5 minutes later when everything collapses.

I’m sure you could but they’ll last even longer without the oxygen.

"Coffee? That was 5 different backups."

One of the first rules of prepping is estentials FIRST!

“If they get hungry enough they’ll eat it.”

Indeed, but if things are bad, why make it even more difficult by forcing food on someone that they don’t like. I’d rather save that for the zombie apocalypse and have stuff I and others like to eat if it’s just a few week’s bump in the road. Bugs are edible, but I’ll grab a can of tuna first before I start looking under rocks, thanks.

Poor Laz is so screwed that when SHTF he’ll think it’s just another day.

Have you watched that show "Alone"?

The guy who won knew how to forage as well as hunt and was willing to eat anything nonpoisonous.

It was an interesting show from the prepper point of view because the first six guys dropped out in the first six days. There was one who had a health problem (self inflicted) but the rest just could not hack it mentally. And these were guys chose to go into the situation.

My husband and I are currently studying for our Technician’s License.

I’ve always been fascinated by Ham Radio - and by radio in general - but only recently realized how important it can be for oneself, and for helping others, in disaster situations.

You definitely don’t over-ping. I’d keep doing what you’re doing. If people have a problem with it, they don’t have to read them. Don’t cater to the difficult at the expense of your base ;)

I got some interesting news for you: as if Friday late afternoon to now, reports from other media that EBT system is down almost everywhere in US .... Also debit cards and credit cards. To some extent. Many grocery stores etc now posting signs “ cash only”

Wondering how many freepers affected at what locations

Also affected : PayPal and others Lucky I filled up gas tank this morning and home supplies look good but if this continues tomorrow - look out

Not going to start a separate thread based on hearsay

Stay safe!

A good source for high-percentage, CHEAP calcium hypoclorite.

http://www.hydropool.com/cgi-bin/hydro/item/Pool-Chemicals/HTH-POOLIFE-TurboShock-78-1-lb-bag-Pool-Shock/22405.html

EPA instructions for preparing calcium hypoclorite solution for disinfecting water.

http://water.epa.gov/drink/emerprep/emergencydisinfection.cfm#tabs-2

Note...calcium hypoclorite is very corrosive. Read up on the care and storage of this stuff...a sealed glass container might be the best. If the container is not leak-proof...the fumes will rust nearby metal objects.
