A woman who killed her 17-month-old baby girl with a lethal dose of methadone last year was sentenced to up to 30 years behind bars on Wednesday.
Courtney Nicole Howell, 27, of Layton, Utah pleaded guilty in July to giving her baby girl Jaslynn Mansfield methadone but said she only thought the drug would help the child sleep.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that on Wednesday Howell tearfully said she will regret her choice for the rest of her life.
'Trying to forgive myself is an endless battle I struggle with daily,' she said as she wiped away her tears.
'I can't make up my wrong by giving my little girl back her life.'
Howell told 2nd District Judge David Hamilton that she holds herself accountable and hopes to spend her life raising awareness about drug abuse and child endangerment.
'I plan to take every opportunity given to me to help change myself and my life,' she said.
Defense attorney Todd Utzinger asked Judge Hamilton to consider a concurrent prison term for Howell though the judge sentenced her to two consecutive 15 year terms.

Animals take better care of their offspring than some people.
This woman needs to get the needle.
It'll help her sleep.
SWISH!! Nothing but net!
I believe the needle was the start of all her problems in the first place.
Rest in peace little one....
Drugs are SO bad. :-(
(I still don’t believe in the War-On-Drugs)
If I had done this stupid thing I would save everyone the trouble and give myself the needle!
My mother gave my sister a quarter pill of the barbituates my mother was prescribed for epilipsy in order to calm my sister down and she ended up sleeping for nearly two days. Scared the hell out of my mother. What a horrible thing if she had died.
People make stupid mistakes, sometimes they get away with it other times not so lucky.
Others kill and eat their offspring.
when I was 15 I had a roommate in her mid twenties who occasionally, when she had a hot date, would give her son phenobarb to make sure she was uninterrupted.
That is when I first discovered the varieties of motherhood.
Only about 20 months separated this woman from simply exercising her “right to choose” and being a murderer.
“Trying to forgive myself is an endless battle I struggle with daily”
That’s probably because you can’t forgive yourself for something like this, because you didn’t wrong yourself.
The person she really wronged is dead now, so they can’t exactly forgive her either. She had best seek forgiveness from God, though, because she wronged Him too by murdering one of His children.
Very true. Didn’t think of that. I’m busy with other things.
Yikes!
The old “sip of beer/wine” when they are teething trick might be relatively harmless, but it’s probably best not to go further than that without consulting a doctor.
But how did she (the mother) get Methadone in the first place?
At age 27, I imagine she’s most likely a pretty healthy young mother.
>>> Prosecutors said that Howell never told hospital staff that the child was given methadone, information which would have saved the baby’s life.
The baby died of ‘acute methadone toxicity,’ the warrant states.
Police searched baby bottles in the childs bedroom and found that one of them had methadone - the drug that killed her and her father months before. <<<
Strange that baby’s father also died from methadone.
Not that strange, addicts pal around together and they tend to suicide and overdose at amazing rates.
The big sleep.
OK, a woman kills her kid with drugs, gets 30 years. I guess that’s justice.
But what about the woman that aborts her child where it’s kept alive for Nazi style experimentation and the woman is celebrated as exercising her rights???
To me they are both crimes equally deserving punishment.
