One recent college graduate is so frustrated with her lack of job prospects that she's attempting to sell off her college degree - for $50,000. Stephanie Ritter, a 26-year-old Florida State University alum, has listed her diploma on eBay for the staggering sum to cover the 'actual cost' of attending the school. Now $40,000 in debt and living in Southern California, Stephanie is fed up with being unable to find a job in her field, despite having a Bachelor's degree - so she's come up with a drastic solution to pay off her loans and 'validate my use of time between 2007-2011'.

She didn’t do cost/benefit analysis on her degree, and now it’s everybody else’ fault.

My daughter has suggested she’ll major in theater.

I told her that if she really wants to go that route to major in business and minor in theater. Then try to get a back office job at a theater company where she can leverage helping to run operations for opportunities to perform.

AND with a business degree if she can’t get an office job with a theater company shell have other alternative options she can pursue.

A “Mrs.” degree if I ever saw one...

Well, not for her...the other version of this story posted on the Orlando Slantinel contained this important nugget:

"Despite it all, she says she would still go to college if she had to do it again, she'd just choose a more queer friendly school in a city with opportunities for her to make money to support herself."

As I thought, she graduated with a useless degree in this case Theatre.

GASP! A Theatre major can't find a high paying job? But I would assume that Theatre companies are clamoring to find Theatre majors to hire and give money to. Who would have guessed?

Well, there is always the federal government. Her biggest problem getting a high paying federal job is that she is the wrong color.

Well there is a bit more to an MLS degree. Checking out books is something the work-study students do at a college library.

My kid’s engineering school has a 90 day guarantee. You will get a job, in your field, at a competitive wage within 90 days, or we will give you free classes to get a Masters in your field for free.

My older daughters have realized that their career paths don’t require college. They both have associates degrees and are continuing their education slowly and debt free.

>>My daughter has suggested she’ll major in theater.

Tell her to double major in theater and English. They’ll always be a need for English teachers with a drama background, and limitless creative freedom to create shows that can seriously inspire those that may become future actors.

It’s pretty stupid, but good luck getting a library job without one...for some reason.

Staff at my local library is flat out worthless. My daughter worked at a library for a few years while in HS and college. When we moved to a new town, she was appalled at the low level staff with LS degrees.

She applied and even with 4 years experience, they weren’t interested in her.

I disagree...there are many degrees tied for “most worthless”.

The only other more worthless degree is Master of Library Science - like you need a masters degree to check out books or do information requests!

You likely have never had to engage in any detailed research projects. If you had, you'd soon find out that many of these "librarians" are actually highly-skilled archivists, whose efforts have saved many a scholar or researcher or investigator. Some archivists are worth their weight in gold.

A degree in history is actually a pretty good degree. It is one of the most common undergraduate degrees for law school and other advanced disciplines that require a hell of a lot of reading and, more importantly, analysis.

Yeah, I thought about recommending an English degree. I’ve known a LOT of really successful English majors in the field of business and management analysis. Within my own age cohort, or older cohorts.

Which is an important caveat given the complete infestation of PC totalitarianism into English departments since my undergrad years (and they were more than Liberal enough back then) I really am doubting the value of an English degree these days.

In my experience it’s the business schools that are, outside of most dedicated STEM degrees (don’t get me started on climate science tho!) the last bastions of classically liberal analytical thought.

Too many people have fallen for the “do what you love and you’ll get rich” mantra, without searching first for ways to actually earn a living wage for it.

Criminy! I think i see the problem. It’s a degree in Theater! Not worth a plugged nickle!

I feel your pain. I dealt with that crap when I was in college and recently had to sit through some woman’s tirade about “agency” and “patriarchy” during an AP meeting.

“I’ll give her $5 bucks. I always wanted my cat to have a degree.”

You’d be wasting your money. That degree isn’t transferable to cats.
