Nearly 700 UW-Madison faculty sign letter on fetal tissue bill
Journal Sentinel ^ | 8-25-2015 | Karen Herzog

Nearly 700 University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty members have signed a letter to the editor to the Journal Sentinel arguing that a bill being considered by the Legislature to ban the use of fetal tissue and cells would not only close off avenues of hope for patients, it would send a message to biomedical scientists and the biotechnology industry "that Wisconsin is no place to do business."

"We wonder whether legislators have considered the ethical implications of denying current and future patients the benefits of the research that would be blocked by this legislation," the letter says.

Research done with cell lines derived from fetal tissue has benefited millions in the form of vaccines and treatments for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, heart disease, and viral and bacterial infections, the letter says.

"The cell lines derived from fetal tissue are commonly used for research in laboratories worldwide," the letter says. "Other tissues and cells, such as those derived from miscarriages, cannot be substituted for this research, despite the claims of the proponents of this ban."

One widely used cell line known as HEK293 is used in nearly 100 labs on the UW-Madison campus alone and is critical for flu vaccine development and production, the letter says.

"There is no suitable substitute for the HEK293 cell. To attempt to find a replacement for these or for cells derived in the future, in all their diverse applications, would cost billions and risk untold numbers of lives."

As originally written, the legislation proposed by Rep. André Jacque (R-De Pere) would criminalize the use of cells derived from human fetal tissues. It is already a crime to profit from the sale of fetal tissue, and abortion clinics say no tissue transfers of any kind are happening in Wisconsin.

“that Wisconsin is no place to do business.”

What it’s all about. Money for killing babies.

Sounds like Madison attracted 700 of the wrong kind of University faculty. And, this is not the first exposition of that truth. If we legally deny them access to dead babies, will these ghouls leave the state? Please let it be so. Just the notion of it has me supporting the legislation.

The California legislature raised approx. 3 billion dollars for stem cell research a few years ago, an in your face George Bush and your opposition to fetal stem cell research reaction. As far as I know, so far it’s been a bust.

So what? This is like saying that money obtained through robbing a bank was used to feed the poor. Who do they think they are, Robin Hood?

My nieces very conservative husband taught physics there for a year.

First couple of weeks there, another prof walked by and noticed that he had Drudge up on his computer. He got a cold stare and a “Oh...so you’re one of THEM”

Couldn’t wait to get out, and they both now teach at the College of Charleston.

The petition is a lie.

There is no need to use fetal tissue in the research.

Pretending otherwise only seeks to justify abortion.

First, I dont believe it. I Have a brain injury and doctors say NOTHING new on the horizon for foreseeable future. Wouldn’t there have been great advances for a our military brain injured if fetal cells were so helpful?

Second, who the heck am I to want to be cured as a result of the death of another human being?!?!!?

Not that it matters, because abortion is just wrong, but how many lives would have to be saved to offset the number of abortions done worldwide since 1970?

I’d rather be stuck with a degenerative disease but keep my dignity and be able to face God.

That being said, what about placenta cells and and the staggeringly strong computers we have today? Can’t they achieve the same goal?

I know of a university which got about two dozen baby heads and did research on them. For what purpose I do not know.

There is no excuse for anyone using babies heads, when there are perfectly good rabbits out there just waiting to be whacked.

The abortion clinics say, no tissue transfers of any kind are taking place in Wisconsin, it being a federal crime to profit from such transfers)”.
These intellectuals shouldn’t have a problem with a similar state law also making it illegal since the baby butchers say they aren’t doing it anyway—selling the meat.
So it’s all academic.
Right?
