In This Day And Age, Football Fans Face Difficult Societal Dilemma
CBS ^ | August 20, 2015 | Jared Max

Posted on 08/22/2015 8:34:30 PM PDT by MinorityRepublican

Despite all the knowledge we have about the dangers of playing tackle football, I do not expect the sport to disappear from American culture any more than I count on the extinction of cigarettes.

Football is deeply ingrained in America’s fabric. Eliminating its presence would be a more arduous task than turning the Titanic away from an iceberg. The game is deeply embedded with advertisers and the American economy, as well as millions of Americans who spend significant amounts of money to support their favorite teams.

Professional and College football is as much a part of Americana as Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.

Despite all the knowledge we have about the dangers of driving automobiles, I do not expect the practice to disappear from American culture any more than I count on the extinction of cigarettes.

Driving is deeply ingrained in America’s fabric. Eliminating its presence would be a more arduous task than turning the Titanic away from an iceberg. The pastime is deeply embedded with advertisers and the American economy, as well as millions of Americans who spend significant amounts of money on their cars.

Driving is going nowhere.

But where are the drivers going to come from?

Who, exactly, wants to eliminate football from ‘the fabric of America’? And why?

High School football even more so, here in Texas and throughout the South.

Mr. Max is apparently afraid of his own shadow and is unwilling to take risks. I played football in high school and got my bell rung several times..I wasn’t good enough to play football in college so I played rugby instead. I never had my bell rung playing rugby. I believe the difference is due to no helmets in rugby, or pads for that matter. If you want to eliminate or reduce concussions in football all that is needed to back off on the technology used in helmets. I am not saying to get rid of helmets, leather ones with some padding would be fine. It is something to go back to. As a conservative I am usually open to things that worked in the past. Now if they would just get rid of that dang forward pass rule!

This is the person that wants it eliminated:

And you get one guess, and one guess only, why. My guess he has his panties in a twist because one of his mentally ill compadres, Michael Sam, wasn't given a "fair chance" in the NFL.

As I’m getting older, I could get behind this, if it’s affordable

I agree wholeheartedly. They made the helmet a weapon and are trying to rein it in with rules. That isn’t working. Time to make it not so convenient to lead with your head as a battering ram. Nerf helmets without facemasks might be in order

I guess tinkerbell is going after the CFL also. Though he got more than a fair chance there in the little league

Put a fluorescent dye pack inside the top of the helmet, you break it you're smurf blue and gone from the game.

Please. You could have an onfiield death every week and it would still be the biggest sport in the land. Bread and Circuses.

With the cost of equipment and liability insurance, my hunch is that less and less communities are offering youth leagues, so the opportunity to play is not there for many. Could be the same for small middle and high schools - just too expensive. Much cheaper to offer other sports like soccer or lacrosse.

This fan has no dilemma. I also like MMA and have no dilemma about that either. I don’t like it when sportswriters complain and talk of feeling bad for watching, they are no more going to stop watching than I am. Perhaps they should take a midol.

I’m not concerned about a possible lack of players.
