I wear a 40+ year old Seiko. It’s a self winder. No batteries. Everyone I know just uses their cell phone, but I put a bullet through my cell phone when I retired, after been on call 24/7/365 for 30 years.
TRY, oh please try, to read for comprehension, Up Yours. The article is quite specific. You are conflating figure. The Article specifies US Sales in the MONTH of JUNE were down by 14%, not WORLDWIDE sales for the ENTIRE YEAR were down by 14%.
Do even you know how to do statistical analysis? I don't think so. At least not from what you are posting.
Try comparing actual regional statistics correctly. . . not something you pulled out of your nether regions without knowing what you are talking about. You are the one slinging CRAP! SHEESH.
Take your 1.2 billion watches and divide by 12 months. Now you have 100 million per month multiply that by 14% and you have 14 million. 37% of the Apple Watches in the world were sold in the US according to Apple. . . so multiply by 37% to get the approximate US reduction in sales possibly attributable to the Apple Watch. 5.18 million.
Not so unbelievable if you count people holding off with plans to buy, or receive as a gift, an Apple Watch in the upcoming few months or who have may have already bought an Apple Watch in the preceding quarter. Not slinging crap at all.
Bloomberg's economical statistical analysts also came up with the same conclusions as this article. . . but it was not portable on FR. It's been confirmed elsewhere. I've already skewered YOUR completely flawed and high-school level cross-checking and blown you out of the water. I will again remind you that I have a degree in Economics and it's obvious you haven't been within a mile or two of an economics education.
More lies upon lies upon lies.
Even if Apple took 14% of sales in the US for total watches sold since January 2015 (which is impossible), it would still only amount to 1.5% OF TOTAL WATCHES SOLD WORLDWIDE EVERY YEAR (24 MILLION).
Nice “Apple dominance”. Nice “front page news”.
Go back to your hole of deceit and wallow in your mud of Apple groupie slop. You sound awfully similar to a government employee plant who caresses stats that lie to the people to “convince” their way of thinking to keep your job in tact. Sounds like a glorified Marxist to me.
Here we go again. A degree in Economics.
You can’t even fathom simple math. Lies, lies, and more lies.
Sometimes it’s just nice to wear a watch that you know cannot possibly be watching you. There are days my smartphone just stays on the dresser (in a cookie tin when I really want to spite the data miners).
Incidentally, I posted those data from that site on FreeRepublic over a month ago. You aren't showing me anything I don't already know. . . I posted a reply with an analysis of the data in relation to the worldwide watch market.
First off, many, if not most of us are not gen-x/y/z types that are addicted to 24/7 instant gratification "keep in touch" and do not need smartphones or "apps".
Further, telling the time has multiple uses, to wit:
I use it during weight training to time rest intervals
During cooking to be precise
In general, to keep track of the time of day.
No, I do not carry a cell phone around with me.
A clock on the wall is not always there, a watch is and is accurate.
I don’t really think watches will really ‘go away’. It really depends upon what you want out of a watch. I suspect a lot of the recent uptake in ‘smart’ watches has more to do with the younger set that probably wasn’t much into watches as anything more than really cheap tools.
There are a lot of folk who appreciate the engineering behind a well designed and made watch. I’d be one of those. I dont even particularly care for quartz watches myself, thou there are a few I like (there seem to be exceptions to everything).
I’ll be interested in seeing how watch manufacturies react. On the high end of such things the effect should be minimal, but low end brands may be in store for some trouble.
” I posted a reply with an analysis of the data in relation to the worldwide watch market.”
Which is also a lie. Lies, lies, and more lies. Total statistical garbage. Simple Math refutes your “business economics degree” results. Based on what you’re saying, I can see why so many graduates can’t get a job in today’s world.
Lol some swatch watches are extremely hard to read for folk lkke myself who are colorblind. Hell, I’ve seen some rather high dollar watches recently that are kinda hard to read if you dont know the trick to them. I dont really get the appeal of the ‘jumping hour’ complication. Takes all kinds to make a world though.
What lies? Everything I posted is the truth. I can LINK to the proof of everything I post as I am proving. You link to data without interpreting it correctly . . . and I correctly interpret it for you.
YOU posted the false statements, misrepresentations of the data, trying to falsely compare monthly data to yearly data. You also apparently did not bother to read the articles for comprehension and even link to any of the articles for the source material before you attacked me. If there are lies. NAME THEM. You cannot because I have not lied.
You then post obscene innuendo about me because you know you cannot prove your contentions. . . so you resort to ad hominem attacks when I prove you wrong.
1.2 Billion watches worldwide in a yearwatches from 10¢ to $150,000, when if you read the articles you'd know they are talking about the US Market only, and very few of the throw-away junk watches have much impact on that numberand you claim that US Apple Watches sold 168 million units! YOU pulled that number out of your rear end!
U.S. watch sales fell the most in seven years in June, one of the first signs Apple Inc.s watch is eroding demand for traditional timepieces.
Retailers sold $375 million of watches during the month, 11 percent less than in June 2014, according to data from NPD Group. The 14 percent decline in unit sales was the largest since 2008, according to Fred Levin, head of the market researchers luxury division. Apple Helps Push U.S. Watch Sales to Biggest Drop in Seven Years August 7, 2015 Thomas Mulier Bloomberg Business
NO ONE IN THE ARTICLE, least of all ME ever claimed that number. That's a strawman YOU created out of FALSE interpretation of the statistics so that you could ridicule the article and me. YOU LIE. Try arguing the facts presented in the article, not ones you make up. YOU don't know at all what you are talking about, Up Yours.
Cook did say repeatedly that even with the companys inability to produce enough watches to fulfill demand, Apple sold more of the devices than the companys executives expected.
Sales of the watch did exceed our expectations, and they did so despite supply still trailing demand at the end of the quarter In fact, the Apple Watch sell-through was higher than the comparable launch periods of the original iPhone or the original iPad. . . The 5 biggest takeaways of Apple's Q3 2015 quarterly earnings July 21, 2015 Jason Snell Macworld
Where have I lied? Where has the article lied? The only misrepresentations or lies on here are coming from YOU.
I showed my math. Please show us how you can squeeze an entire year of world wide watch sales into one month of US watch sales. I understand what I am doing. . . you do not. I will grant that my estimate is very rough, but it at least adjusts for a single month, and attempts to do a single national market. . . not confabulating all sales in the entire world for an article about sales ONLY in the United States. I also appear to know how to read for comprehension of what the writer is trying to convey to the readers. You apparently missed the content entirely because you are so blinded by your delusional hatred of all things Apple.
So the challenge is in your court. For your conclusions to be correct, you need to show that the United States of America buys the entire worldwide output of every watch manufactured and sold those watches, except for 168 million . . . in one single month. That was your implicit claim based on how you used it to refute the article and somehow me. You asserted it, NOW PROVE IT!
I buy a watch annually. Wal-Mart - $10
Otherwise my iphone handles the rest.
They are not brainless. They are brainwashed fanbots. Predictable as the sun rising in the East. As in everything Apple is excellent, all others are second and third rate. Some people seek salvation in Christ, others find ego salvation and flattery in buying any gadget made in China by Apple
Stopwatch on Casio is very useful for these two. I also use the dual time function as a timekeeper kind of stopwatch for longer events. But you need a Casio model where the dual time is independent from the actual time
READ THE F'ing article again for comprehension. WHERE in the article, and linked article from Bloomberg Business, or the source materials, does it say "Apple took 14% of sales in the US for total watches sold since January 2015"? Please find that statement and show it to us. . . you won't find it because it doesn't exist in the articles anywhere. It only exists in your delusions. It's another strawman you have created to argue your delusional conclusions that the article's author and I are liars.
Here is what the article actually said, verbatim:
". . . data from market research firm NPD Group shows that traditional watch sales in the United States dropped by 14 percent in the month of June, as compared to June 2014." The Apple Watch effect? Traditional watch sales drop 14 percent in June August 9, 2015 Nick Mediati MacWorld UK
You do know what the word "verbatim" means, don't you? It means word-for-word, "the same words as used originally." I thought I better define it for you as you seem to be having a bit of trouble reading for comprehension.
To further nail the facts down, here are the data from Bloomberg:
"U.S. watch sales fell the most in seven years in June, one of the first signs Apple Inc.s watch is eroding demand for traditional timepieces.Retailers sold $375 million of watches during the month, 11 percent less than in June 2014, according to data from NPD Group. The 14 percent decline in unit sales was the largest since 2008. . . Apple Helps Push U.S. Watch Sales to Biggest Drop in Seven Years Thomas Mulier August 7, 2015 Bloomberg Business
Does ANYONE see the words "since January" in either of those articles???? I certainly don't. However, Up Yours Marxists claims he does and is arguing that I did and the article does. . . so that he can call me a liar about these data! How reprehensible can he get? He is entitled to his opinions, he is NOT entitled to create his own facts out of whole cloth to use to smear people.
I did not post information from that site, link to it and post an analysis of the World Watch market? That's a lie, you say? How arrogant of you.
I did indeed do so. It was in June and posted as a reply on Freerepublic. I researched it in response to a question about how big the worldwide market in watches when someone claimed that "No one wears watches anymore" and I refuted that by showing that 1.2 billion watches were sold in 2014. And commented that if 2.1 billion watches were sold, who were the NOBODY who weren't wearing them?
However, I feel no urge to search it out to prove that once again you are wrong and again lying about me. I will just satisfy my self and say "LIAR."
I know simple arithmetic in the head is not in vogue for the younger generation, but I do it without thinking.
For me, a wristwatch makes simple timing like that a snap.
Unless i lose track, which I have been known to do. A spiffy watch with audible alarms would not work as I am deaf a a stump. Mebbe one that zapped you?
Awwww. Apple fanboy got his wittle feelings hurt
