“There Are More Cats…Than There are Republican Presidential Candidates,” Fed Up With Cat Colony

“There are more cats…than there are Republican presidential candidates,” Neighbors fed up with cat colony

One Norman neighborhood is reportedly the cat’s meow, with resident’s claiming wild felines are running amok.

“There’s a lot of cats now,” said Nathan Hobbs. “There are more cats in this neighborhood, than there are Republican presidential candidates.”

It’s a problem Nathan says has really heated up this summer.

While Santa Claus has Donner, Dancer, and Prancer…Nathan has his own team.

“There’s big gray, there’s little gray, there’s TFC,” said Hobbs. “You’ve got ring tail one, ring tail two, ring tail three…couple tabbies, and that giant Siamese cat.”

Whether they’re pets or strays, some say these cats have terrorized the neighborhood for years.

“They fight all the time, they spray in your yards, and they just keep reproducing,” explained Chelsea Pruitt.

Hands Helping Paws, a cat rescue and adoption organization based in Norman, tells NewsChannel 4 they’re aware of community cats in the neighborhood. They urge those who are concerned to TNR, or trap, neuter, then return the animals to their environment.

Problem is, that’s not cheap.

“If you want to actually get them fixed, they’ll charge you for it,” said Hobbs. “$40 seems to be the going rate, and I don’t have that kinda money to put out $40 for every cat that I see.”

Both Nathan and Chelsea believe the bill should be on the City of Norman.

“I couldn’t imagine them putting any of their resources into cats that aren’t in their protection,” said Pruitt.

NewsChannel 4 reached out to Norman Animal Welfare, but our phone calls were not returned.

Sounds like the area has developed a coyote shortage.

Oh if I lived near I’d adopt one of those and gladly pay for spaying/neutering.

We lived in Norman, but not in a neighborhood with excess cats.

It’s a problem where I live. I took in a stray a few years ago. Wish I could afford to take in more, but I can’t.

It’s the fault of stupid people who abandon their pets or let their intact cats outside so they can breed indiscriminately. Too bad we can’t spay or neuter these idiots.

I had that problem once when I lived in the first wooded area near the county animal shelter. And I'd hafta suggest CB Longs thru a longish barrel. Effective, quiet urban varminter.

And before you cat people get excited, we have three of the little bags-o-bones living here on the new spread at Atwood Whistle Stop. The one that lives outdoors is a "fixed" adopted stray.

A) Unbeknownst to them, the neighborhood probably has a cat hoarder they need to track down and report to the authorities, that’s 95% of the problem right there. Ours was a middle-aged pot smoking guy, so don’t automatically assume it’s the little old lady who puts out food to keep her trash from being scattered all over the neighborhood.

B) If you do a neighborhood fundraiser or work with a local shelter for funding solutions, TNR will work amazingly well.

C) Cats are better than rats.

Good luck, we beat this problem and so can you :)

Catch, neuter and release programs are generally paid for by the city or county as a public health program.

If you just remove the animals a new group will move in to their former territory. You need to keep them there to hold the territory from new cats moving in ... but you can keep them from reproducing. Once neutered they fight less, less mating calls, spraying etc.

TNR is the worst policy ever. We had a colony around the office I used to work at. The people in the office across the street would feed them. Then that office went out of business; no one to feed the cats. Then someone started showing up, she’d drive up, put piles of cat food in the middle of the parking lot and sidewalks and leave. My boss confronted her one day and she told him they were TNRed. He showed her the fleas that were jumping on and off of him just from walking through the parking lot. The front door area smelled like fresh cat spray every morning. Sometimes adults need to make difficult decisions.
