On an afternoon like any other, I was in a store like any other, a general store. I got to the register at the same time as another customer and motioned for him to go first. His clothes were worn but neat, his skin was tan but clean, and his sunglasses were spotless: he was unmistakably from out of town. He approached the register and made a request under his breath, “papers.”

“What?” replied the cashier as a line formed behind me.

I always ask for things like that very loudly. Just for the benefit of the kids.

Ayah. What if nobody cares.

I’m surprised at this *native* maine author ...b/c in reality, nobody in Maine cares what you are wearing, or if you are tan or not. Nobody.

Unless you specify that you want to bum a ‘store rolled’ cigarette from your buddy, you’re likely to be offered a Band-Aid® box filled with hand rolls. At $7 a pack, smokers in Maine roll for an hour or so after supper every night.

In the early 60's my wife and I used to "roll our own" with a "ready roll machine" and we used what the hunkys called "bugga" a tobacco so strong that it was used both for chewing and pipe smoking by the Poles, Chechs, hunkys etal.

Rolling your own was the preferred method by most Americans until the late 20s and then they switched because smokes were so cheap {before taxes of any kind}.

“’store rolled’”

Or ‘tailor made’ is the common expression...

Why should they care about a legal product being sold? And how can I get a job writing about nothing? I mean the writers for Seinfeld had the greatest job in the world. They blew it on the last episode though.

"...buglers by the 24 count box and tobacco five pounds at a time."

Me too - until I quit 20 years ago.
Didn't use a machine - rolled 'em the old-fashioned way.
Would drive my boss nuts 'cause the butts in the ashtray looked like roaches.

I vaguely remember hearing my mother tell of a neighbor woman who rolled her own smokes and could do so using just one hand.

Back around 1970, I tried rolling my own cigarettes about 4-5 times. I am usually pretty good with my hands, but it was a disaster.

Gave up the habit 4 years later, thank heavens.

I believe you.

And, from what I have observed, hair care products and services are not available to gray-haired boomer women in Maine.

Heh. Blue-hair ladies are too busy canning & preserving this time of year and knitting sweaters for the winta; making blueberry pies.

There's one hair salon in Bangor, that I know of... it may be the only one in all of Penobscot County ...in Mabel's living room.
