Russell Wilson, Seahawks agree to 4-year, $87.5 million contract extension

The Seattle Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson have agreed to a contract extension, according to Peter King. The deal is worth $87.5 million over four years, a significant pay upgrade for the Super Bowl-winning quarterback. The deal includes a $31 million signing bonus and roughly $60 million in guaranteed money.

Wilson was entering the final year of his four-year, $3 million rookie contract. Wilson's rookie contract did not include a fifth-year option because he wasn't a first-round pick. Because of that, Seattle would have had to use the franchise tag on him in 2016 -- currently projected at more than $25 million -- if no extension had been signed by then.

Wilson is the second of the four starting quarterbacks selected in the 2012 NFL Draft to receive a new deal. Ryan Tannehill signed a six-year, $95.3 million deal earlier this offseason. However, it was Cam Newton's five-year, $103.8 million extension that raised the price even more for young quarterbacks. Andrew Luck is the next quarterback in line to receive a new contract, which will now likely be priced similarly to Wilson's.

A few reasons why he should get the big bucks:

Wilson is the only QB in NFL history to appear in two SB's in his first three seasons.

Wilson is the first QB in NFL history with a passer rating of over 95.0 in each of his first three seasons.

Wilson has 24 games with a passer rating of 100+ in his first three seasons...more than any other QB in NFL history. Flacco, Marino, and Palmer are tied for second with 19.

Wilson leads all QB's in the NFL over the last 3 years with 10- 4th quarter comebacks and 15- game-winning drives. No other QB in NFL history has ever done this in their first 3 years.

Wilson is the first and only QB in NFL history to throw for 300+ yards and run for 100+ yards (313 & 106) in the same game...against the Rams on 10-19-14.

Wilson led all NFL rushers in 2014 with an average of 7.2 yards per carry.

Wilson has a record of having had a lead at some point in 56 straight games since 2012...the old record was 45 games...Also, in those 56 games, Wilson has never lost an NFL game by more than 9 points.

Wilson has won 36 games in his first 3 seasons; three more than any other QB in NFL history.

Including the postseason, Wilson has won 42 games in his first three seasons; 6 more than any other QB in NFL history.

...

This contract will help make up for being underpaid the first 3 years.

That is going to hurt the Seahawks ability to sign other top talent. In two years they will have to release several really good players.

While some of the personal stats bode well for Russell Wilson’s elite potential, it is stretch to credit him for winning games the way you can credit Andrew Luck for winning games.

Everybody knows that the backbone of the Seahawks is their historic Defense. Their Defense wins games. In fact, Russell Wilson is 2-7 when his Defense fails to hold teams to 24 points or less. So credit the Defense for those winning stats, streaks, most wins in 3 years, 4th quarter comebacks, etc. It is not as if Marshawn Lynch wasn’t on fire ripping off long runs in a lot of “Wilson’s” 4th quarter come-backs.

Team stats should never be confused with personal stats. Wilson is a great young QB who is adept at running a huddle, dynamic at extending plays, savvy at exploiting his opponents mistakes, and intelligent about the way he approaches the game. I think he is on an elite trajectory, but he is still young and still not a proficient pocket passer yet. Scrambler yes, but not a genuine pocket passer.

He is going to be a great one, but the overwhelming recent success of the Seahawks has much more to do with the historic Defense than it does Russell Wilson. People always give QBs too much credit for wins and too much blame for losses.

He did however throw the losing interception in the last super bowl. That is not good on the resume.

Great for him, and it’s par for the course. Every trong starting QB is getting this money and more. From Manning to Brady to Rodgers on down, the contracts are huge and a good investment. You can’t win without the QB. Teams are still fielding great talent despite these huge on QB contracts. It’s also part of the reason Seattle and the 49ers had a great run the past few years, they had high-flying performance at QB out of the draft on cheap rookie contracts. For those teams who catch fire with great talent around the field and a great QB, they have the easiest route to playoff success. It’s a small window, though. 2-3 years tops.

Most importantly, Russell Wilson has mastered today's VERY complex NFL playbooks. That's why many have high hopes for Marcus Mariotta, who appears to have the necessary intelligence to master the modern NFL playbook.

Just a reminder that Russell Wilson didn’t even throw his first passing TD in the super bowl against the Broncos until his team was up 29-0.

Oh, and Wilson’s passer rating for the first half of that super bowl? 0. Zero.
