Same. I live north and travel into the city everyday for work. Never come here without my piece. When working on the North Shore a handful of years back (when “polar bear hunts” were going on across the nation), I did have to brandish once.

I come from Erie and often heard from my black fellow workers who were exposed to Pittsburgh black employees (who only showed up one, two days a week to work and didn’t do crap when they were there) “Ain’t NOTHING worse than a Pittsburgh nigger.’ I never agreed or whatever, just put up with it. I got a new job down in Philly and remember a black guy who was from Pittsburgh coming to my office to complain about his co-workers in a locked down forensic Unit of Phila. State Hospital. I damn near fell out of my chair when he, from Pittsburgh, told me “There ain’t nothing worse than a Philly nigger.” Are blacks prejudiced or merely aware?

To be fair I do know a number of decent, hard-working Christian black people in Pittsburgh. And there is no shortage of 47% white trash vermin either.

IMHO blacks in Pittsburgh in the 40’s and 50’s were better off economically than they are today.

There were jobs for them in the mills and the mines.

That's a huge part of the problem right there. Let's take a black kid (or any kid, for that matter) who gets out of high school with let's say, a "C" average. Back in the 1950's that kid had a shot at a good full-time job with the railroad, or with one of the many Pittsburgh steel mills. Start as a laborer, learn a trade on the job. The kid might have faced some racism, but he had a shot.

Not today. Such a kid has no future. He could, if he is lucky, cobble together a couple of part-time jobs, jobs with no future. Sure, he could go to college, but to study what? Not everyone is cut out to be a petroleum engineer.

That is not to excuse criminal behavior. but it helps explain it. Trump is right. America needs to bring back those industrial jobs.

It is probably largely because (a) life in crowded cities is artificial and inimical to the human psyche, (b) anonymity attracts criminal elements which would not fare well in villages, where "everybody knows your name". That's my theory.

Pittsburgh used to be like a stitched-together quilt of little villages where everyone knew your name. My parents felt safe giving me free run of the neighborhood when I was growing up because if I caused any trouble someone who knew them (and quite possibly was related) would call them and rat me out.

That all changed in the 80’s when steel collapsed and we had that massive outmigration.

Yes it is a damning article, but cuts to the truth. And of course as one FReeper noted, much of the increased black violence is a result of the DOJ's meddling in local police affairs.

Thank the conservatives in Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Colorado, and New Hampshire who refused to vote for McCain or Romney, not to mention those in North Carolina and Indiana who are on double secret probation.

Very poorly written and the numbers don't jive

If you read this bulleted point from your reference and understand what type of math they are using, could you clue me in?

If 60% of the prison population of 100,000 are nonwhite or latino that means blacks and latinos are 60,000 of the 100,000.

43,670 (blacks) + 9,220 (Latinos) + 4,880 (non-Latino Whites) + 340 (asians) = 58110 ... close to the 60% given, but I had to add a factor of 10 to each race statistic to get there. The remainder 100,000 - 58110 = 41890 which is ostensibly the # of white males incarcerated.

The last Republican to win the Mayor’s office in Pittsburgh was in 1929 (Charles Kline). When the Dems won it in 1933, they have held it continuously ever since. The last time there was a “competitive” election was in 1965, and the GOP candidate got only 37.5%.
