My Dad and I used to watch the Jackie Gleason Show. Dad turned 90 last June, but his memory is not so good and I don't have anybody to share these memories with anymore. So I thought someone on free republic might have some.

I found a large collection of old TV guides while cleaning out the old family farmstead, many of which date from about the 1957-1960 era. What a fantastic time for TV back then (I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s and many shows from that era now look like “Masterpiece Theatre” compared to what is on now). I love seeing the Westerns that were on most nights of the week with the obvious ones like “Bonanza” and “Gunsmoke”, along with “The Texan”, “Maverick”, “Riverboat”, and “The Rebel”. The variety shows too must have been grand entertainment as well with Gleason and I would have loved to have watched the Dinah Shore Chevy Show and to have been able to have watched it in colour, as it was one of the first colour shows NBC made back then.

Yes, I remember that. Then there was this ...

They built their stages on a turntable so they could rotate from one bit to the next. The show was telecast live, and one night, the turntable stuck between two sets. So Jackie had to come out from behind the curtains and free lance for what may have been the rest of the hour. He was chain smoking and sweating bullets.

I had a friend Peter Muchmore. One day he called himself Littleless. I always thought that was a nice bit of self deprecating humor.

Johnny Yumah was a Rebel. I believe that was sung by Johnnie Cash.

My favorite is the scene where Norton is going through a pre-swing routine that goes on and on and finally Gleason starts screaming “Just hit the ball”.

I think it takes place at the golf course.

I also liked the episode when Ralph and Ed were doing the kitchen gadget commercial on live TV and Ralph could hardly speak.

That live episode had much ad libbed. During the reheaarsal, the gizmo falls apart, with one piece shooting across the room. Norton quickly suggests adding something about spear fishing. Also, during the show, when Ralph knocks down the whole set, that was NOT supposed to happen, but it sure worked!

Great show, though I'm a Burns and Allen man m'self.

Joe the bartender would talk to Mr. Dennehy, an invisible character. My history teacher told me years ago that Mr. Dennehy took in Gleason when his mother passed , leaving him an orphan at 16. Mr. Dennehy lived in Bayonne. Gleason always referred to Bayonne in his shows and he often stopped in several Bayonne gin mills because he loved the town.

We saw Jackie Gleason at the Miami Airport, but were respectful and didn’t approach him.
