#1. The Walking Dead
Torchwood?
Really?
Torchwood?
Maybe at #69....
Where’s Science Fiction Theater?
They ignored that classic, and included Land of the Lost?
/facepalm
An utter farce. Space 1999 belongs at the very top of the list. (if you overlook the horrible science in the show.)
The Jetsons.
Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) & Star Trek: The Next Generation have no place on this list.
Lost in Space needs to be ranked lower and B5 higher, and the SciFi channel had better shows than tripe like Lexx (e.g., Eureka).
Evidence:
#1 How many other shows inspired engineers to actually try to build the tech?
#2 How many other SciFi shows inspired people to go into engineering school or to become a doctor?
Scotty's exploits as the Enterprise's redoubtable chief engineer inspired many students to pursue careers in engineering. Because of this, the Milwaukee School of Engineering presented Doohan with an honorary degree in engineering
#3 How many other shows have influenced the culture so that lines of dialog or plot points have entered the common culture? I can think of only one other show, the Lost in Space "Danger Will Robinson" line. I realize Dr. Who is a very long running and popular show, but I don't know of any lines of dialog or plots which have entered the culture from it. There is a drink called "Beam me up Scotty." What is the Dr. Who drink? Everyone in America can slip in "He's dead, Jim," or "beam me up" into a conversation and we will know what they are talking about.
Twilight Zone, Number One, hands down. The writing on that show was phenomenal.
22. Farscape
They series ended without completing the story. Main characters left in big, big trouble.
The final 3 hours are available on DVD, just in case anyone watches it.
Battle of the Planets was just a re-done version of Gatchaman
I have always enjoyed scifi but I’ve never heard of half of those.
Soylent Green is people!!!!
No? Not there huh?
Think I’d put Firefly nearer to the top. Great show, shame Fox canceled it before it really had a chance to gain traction and generate better ratings.
Wish it could come back even today, but I know it isn’t going to happen sadly.
What about Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. First the movie and then the TV series with Richard Basehart and David Hedison? Never missed an episode. I used to jump for joy every time they released the flying submarine from the Seaview. I’m still waiting for the day that gets built.
X-Files should be number 1.
Babylon 5 needs to be much higher on the list. It was the first show to create a distinct story arc spanning not just a whole season but the entire series back when the various Star Trek spinoffs were wholly episodic with little to nothing linking one episode to another. This new concept is what made Lost so successful.
I’d also rearrange the top 5. X Files doesn’t belong there at all, Star Trek TOS should be 2nd as it defined sci-fi TV for Americans, and the BSG remake was an extraordinary story. Dr Who probably deserves the first slot simply because its been around the longest by far, even if I don’t like the show.
I’d also drop 99% of the anime off of the list.
Space:1999 should be higher on the list, and U.F.O. should be right by it.
