While I don't consider myself an idiot:
I do not love the smell of “barbecue” (Charcoal and lighter fluid fumes sicken me instantly, almost like an allergy, but it's more a mental than physical reaction)
It's strictly a personal problem.

I take extra steps to avoid prolonged direct exposure to the one very specific thing that renders me violently ill.
I do go to cookouts, and as long as I avoid being outside or near the grills, nobody even needs to know I have a problem.When my neighbors grill, I just make certain my windows are closed, and my candles or scented tarts are burning.

It would not occur to me to make my problem an issue for my neighbors.
