The Navy Times reported that fried chicken is out and healthy eating is in. You want fries with that? Too bad, they are out as well.

Fried food is out and nutritional nagging is in as part of the big changes coming to your chow hall.
Menus will not see significant changes — not yet, at least. But you can say goodbye to the fried foods you have come to know and love; breaded chicken, French fries, and the like will be baked in state-of-the-art ovens rather than deep fried. Whole milk will be replaced by skim and soy; fruits and vegetables will be on prominent display. The fast line will remain, but its offerings will be cut back.
And this is just the beginning.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced a host of sweeping changes in May that will affect everything from promotions and training to uniforms and fitness. As part of that, he has set his sights on a well-balanced diet, which he calls “the foundation of a healthy lifestyle” that will provide capable warfighters and lower medical costs.
Seriously, they are only allowing a choice between skim milk and soy milk? These people clearly don’t know much about nutrition. The more ‘fat’ you take out the more it’s replaced with sugars or other variables that aren’t as healthy.
Most likely this is something that Michelle Obama is a part of. Only a nutritionally uneducated tool would do to the Navy what she did to school lunches.
As if military chow wasn’t bad enough.
Meanwhile the Obama’s eats meals fit for a king.

A lot of it depends on the amount of physical activity is being expected of you, (the service member). Desk bound REMF’s don’t really need as many calories as soldier or sailor who is doing exhaustive physical work.
As a point of information, C-rations are absolutely delicious when you are starving. I never got to try MRE’s so I can’t give an opinion on them.
Those who risk their lives every day for this country should be able to eat or drink whatever they wish. I really hate the government.
I tried them and had them around when I lived in PA....power out for 2-3 days and that’s what we ate, they are really good...
I just don’t think that ‘moose butt’ should even express an opinion on anything...she wasn’t elected to anything, and her thing is to ‘look nice and shut up’....
Ha. She fails to look even halfway decent. And I doubt even death will make her shut her mouth.
Midrats after flight ops will never be the same...
Is the idea to encourage healthy eating, or to break their morale? I’m surprised that they haven’t gone back to hardtack and salt pork. Of course the Muslims would probably object to the salt pork.
How long til they go vegan?
Please don’t give them ideas.
Kerry used to enjoy a nice Steak when he was sitting on a Navy Destroyer off the Coast of Vietnam.
I was ‘blessed’ with the opportunity to be around when C-rats were fazing out and MREs were being tested. The C rations were ok if you could eat them hot and in the dark, because seeing them would take away your appetite. Now the part about eating them hot was the trick. We would dig a deep hole, place the box In the hole, with the appropriate cans almost completely opened, light the box and let it burn down around the cans. When the fire is out the cans are hot. Eat and enjoy, when done, place all trash in hole and refill. The MREs were a long learning curve at first, some were ok, some were awful. The long range patrol rations were the worst, but they were light weight and kept you alive. If you really want to get nostalgic about C rations, I miss the little packs of smokes. We were able to trade them for some amazing things, back in those days, in some remote places that still valued Americal Cigarettes.
When I was on Market Time patrol in Vietnam on board small Coast Guard cutters, we never had fresh food and our milk was powdered or evaporated. Sometimes we would have the occasion to rendezvous with a destroyer who would give us fresh fruits, steaks, and most coveted of all was fresh whole milk! Now Moochelle’s program will ban whole milk for sailors. Bummer.
From my time in the Navy, I remember chow hall food being filling and nutritious, but not especially appetizing.
I think the Milk restriction has something to do with the Globull Warming caused Cow shortage.
