Shortly after completing their first movie, in 2004, Kerry and Kevin Conran received an invitation from George Lucas. The Star Wars mastermind would be hosting a summit at Skywalker Ranch, his production facility-cum-small town in San Francisco, gathering some of the most forward-thinking people in the movie business to discuss the future of film.
James Cameron was there, as were Robert Zemeckis and Brad Bird. The brothers were newcomers, but that day they were treated as peers; each of their fellow directors told the Conrans how impressed they were with what theyd accomplished. Their work, they were told, was way ahead of its time.

It was a rip-off of a popular videogame I used to play.
Refused to see it since it featured Little Gwynnie Paltrow - one of the world’s worst and most boring actresses.
I am still trying to think of a movie that was as bad as that...
Maybe ‘Dune’ or ‘Starship Troopers’
Hideously stupid and badly made.
I saw it when it opened and liked it
Could not agree more. I so looked forward to both of these films, having been such a fan of the books, but was so utterly disappointed. There was a mini-series made of Dune that was far superior, got it on DVD and truly appreciate how faithful it was to Herbert.
Starship Troopers just sucked, epically.
One of my favorites. Best of the bunch when it comes to the retro serial style.
I’ll have to dust off that DVD and pop it in.
I an a huge fan of the movie, and the genre in general. The Conrans being such self-depreciating guys makes that love all the more real.
If films like the Star Wars prequels had previously built sets in a computer, no one had built entire movies in a digital environment. It basically birthed the idea of a digital backlot that could blend actors within a computer generated environment."
ummm... no. am i the only one who saw the original Tron from 1982?
starship troopers was a fun movie once you divorced it from the Heinlein universe.
the film was actually a sci-fi bug hunt movie. they wrote it without knowing that Heinlein had written a book like that. when somebody told them about it, they licensed the rights and then adjusted the script to match the book as much as they were willing. but the writer and director were both leftists. if you listen to the commentary on the DVD, the writer in particular was a leftwing nutter. because of that, they didn’t “get” what was so interesting about the Heinlein book and that’s why that spark isn’t in the movie.
so if you ignore the Heinlein work of the same name, it’s a much more entertaining work. and a young Denise Richards looked flawless on the big screen. she was just gorgeous.
i didn’t mind Lynch’s Dune as a teenager. i hadn’t read the books though, so i had no preconceived biases.
The novelization fills in quite a few details and describes stuff you might've missed onscreen.
i always thought sky captain was underrated...of course casting angelina jolie was horrid, but...
I tried. It still sucks.

Agreed, she is gorgeous. She couldn't act her way out of a wet paper sack, though.

The only redeeming quality to that film was Francesca Annis as the Lady Jessica.
“Maybe Dune or Starship Troopers
I liked both of them. I prefer watching them over any George Clowney film.
And the silent scream that you hear at the end, after 'lens cap' and the fade-to-black....priceless.
The problem with Sky Captain is that it wasn’t a good movie. It was a cool concept, with interesting visuals. But it was bad. Uninvolving. Poorly acted.
