Woodsmen on History Channel (bogus hunt)
The History Channel ^

Posted on 07/15/2015 9:19:02 AM PDT by finnsheep

Although I love the History Channel generally, the new series, The Woodsmen, purports to show a fellow shooting a Big Horn Sheep ram, but in actuality was was something else entirely. The ram had a long tail and long hair from its chin to its chest. No Big Horn I have seen in films or photos has either of those features.

Was it one of these guys?

They share a lot of the same range as bighorn

They should rename it the ‘History Revisionists Channel’...or the ‘BS History Channel’.

I never heard of the show so I went on Comcast On-Demand to find the episode you were referring to. I couldn’t find anything in the descriptions of the episodes which mentioned the bighorn sheep.

So I started watching the latest episode that is available for On-Demand which is Episode 3. It feels staged and definitely overly dramatic, but I don’t know how you make a show like this entertaining without doing this.

They did just attribute the OSO Washington landslide in 2014 which killed 43 people to “aggressive logging” which had absolutely nothing to do with the geologic conditions that caused the slide. From that I have concluded that the shows producers are not averse to spreading complete BS.

I do know some characters similar to the guys on the show so I find it somewhat entertaining, and they are trying to make it “educational”. So far they have guys using old dynamite for a gardening project... guys carrying a short little chunk of log across a river... a guy eating “grub worms” and saying they taste like nuts... I have no doubt that they would try to pass off someone’s dog as a longhorn sheep.

Could you at least post a picture of the Big Horn in question? Or is this just for hit’s to the site?

You know, I was wondering if anyone else caught that. When they started their supposed “hunt”, I found myself wondering, “How did these guys, who have no money, get a tag for bighorn?” I guided in Alaska, Arizona and New Mexico and hunted in a lot of places and those “bighorn sheep” they say were NOT wild bighorns. I thought at first they were Corsican sheep, but the color was wrong. They were probably a species of domestic or semi-domesticated sheep.

I’ve noted a number of other things that I considered pure B.S. in the two episodes that I’ve seen. Given the nature of our society today, how many people would recognize that these guys and their “story line” is nonsense.

I’ve looked for images of the alleged “bighorn sheep” in question, but can’t find any. As to soliciting viewers, I wouldn’t bother watching the show...

I’m pretty sure the episode you’re looking for is number 1 from June 22nd.

The color of the animal they killed was very light colored - as were some of the other animals in the flock - nearly white. I know there are Dall sheep that look like Big Horn sheep otherwise, but they don’t have long tails either.
A couple of the animals in the flock could have been spotted or solid black, but you only see them for a few seconds. I raised sheep and goats for over 25 years so little things like a long tail really stick out!

You’re right, some were light colored, but the colors varied too much for wild sheep. The so-called hunt was, I believe, in Washington’s Colville National Forest and there are no dall sheep that far south, not to mention that the horns were far too tightly curled for dall sheep.

Thanks, I found the episode. The adventure in question was about half an hour in. After watching the other episode I was imagining that they bagged the Grinch's dog with some horns attached to his head. It was a relief to see that the animal was actually somebody’s old pet Dall Sheep. I assume they had to pay the goat roper who actually owned it.

Some of the characters are kind of amusing but overall the adventures are just too staged and fakey to spend much time watching the show.

How about "We Used To Have History On It Channel"?

Oh, I am not definitively trying to identify the type of goat or sheep they shot... other than to say that the it wasn’t actually a big horn shot in the National Forest.
