The Trail Less Traveled: Dinosaur hunting, anyone?
Dalton Daily Citizen ^ | 7-8-15 | Larry Case

I’d really like to shoot a dinosaur. I know that some of you are going to think that is just a little weird, but maybe if you have been reading this column for very long you might be getting accustomed to such things. Now that the movie “Jurassic World” is out I felt that it might be more socially acceptable to talk about such things, what with all the dinosaur blasting going on in this flick. You see, here is what is really great about all this. Once we accept the premise that we are going to hunt dinosaurs we open up a whole new world of guns and gear that we need. Believe me when I tell you that we hunters and shooters like the idea of getting our hands on more goodies. Of course, we need some new guns for this sport so let’s start there.

For once I agree with something I saw in a motion picture that related to firearms. Leading man and all around good guy in this movie is Owen Grady (played by Chris Pratt). He carries as his weapon — believe it or not — a Marlin 1895 SBL rifle chambered in — now hold on to your hats — .45/70, that’s right, the old .45/70 government cartridge. The .45/70 round, for all you firearms history geeks out there, came along after the Civil War. In 1873 the U.S. Army adopted the .45/70 cartridge to go with the new 1873 Springfield rifle. The .45/70 is a big cartridge capable of firing a 500 grain bullet. (Making it a good choice for dinosaurs I’m thinking.)

I don't know ... that Marlin 45/70 didn't seem to work all that well.

I’m thinking that a 20MM Lahti might not be enough gun.

The problem is, you probably need to get a brain shot to stop them and their brains are tiny.

A pack of raptors is coming towards you with a T-Rex close behind. This is what you need.

(In before the guy that comes up with the idea for a scifi movie in which hunters go back in time and hunt dinosaurs and become the real reason dinosaurs become extinct.)

L. Sprague De Camp wrote a story about it.

Birds are dinosaurs. If he’s in Georgia he probably shouldn’t shoot the state bird (brown thrasher) but plenty of others to choose from. Just don’t kill a mockingbird.

The gear for hunting dinosaurs already exists, in abundance. In addition, people can easily join dinosaur hunting clubs and get hunting licenses for the critters. Dinosaur meat is the most commonly consumed meat in the world.

Not all dinosaurs died out in the big extinction event. Everyone is quite familiar with the surviving dinosaurs, except that we more commonly refer to them as “birds.”

However, if Jurassic Park billed itself as a movie about going to a park to observe birds, it might not have quite the same appeal.

there really needs to be a sequel to Dredd 3D. anybody who likes sci-fi/dystopian future/action films who hasn't yet seen this, should see this!

And being reptiles, I suppose they'd taste like chicken.

I wonder if you can get barbecue sauce in 55-gallon drums?

Don’t forget to swing by Dinosaur National Monument and get your dinosaur hunting license. Makes it all legal, like.
