A Jersey City man accidentally set himself on fire on Thursday when he was trying to burn ants, police said.
The 46-year-old victim was igniting gas in an alleyway on Bayview Avenue near Martin Luther King Drive at around 5 p.m. when the gas caused a flashback, police said.
The man suffered second degree burns to his lower arms, according to authorities.

Well, the ants are bad this year. Just saying.
Are his aunts ok?
When I was a kid, we used methods that would get us locked up today.
yep but his uncles are all making fun of him...

My Daddy used to kill fire ant beds by pushing a pipe down the middle to maybe a foot depth. He would the pour a pint of so of gasoline down the hole and light it.
It seemed a pretty classy was to do it and it worked.
Me I just put a spoonful of Ortho on the mound then wet it. That works also.
Not sure which works best but Daddy’s system just might but I think it is more expensive.
You can keep fire ants out of your yard but it is a full time job or at least one you have to constantly watch for them.
Yes ... Because Martin Luther King Drive.
OK, who among us hasn’t....never mind....stupid, it burns.
Glad he is OK, but how are the ants? Any word on casualties?
Sounds like liberals supporting SSM.
They only wanted to do the world
a favor by burning the Christians
out of society./sarc
Of course, when your Dad did it a pint of gasoline cost a few pennies.
Then there were some in the dining room, a lot. Put some more traps out and haven't seen any more. Tons of dead ones in the traps.
Then I saw just a few in the kitchen in the cat food bowl. So I filled a large glass cake pan with a little water and float my cat's wet and dry cat food. Haven't seen any more there.
Now the last 3 nights there have been some way back by my computer (I sit and eat sometimes). I got bit and killed the little bugger. Then i picked up some cheese (I burned that pizza) that fell off on the floor and ants were swarming, hit them and threw the cheese outside.
Now I've had just a couple each day. Have been bitten again a few times and squashed the little devils. They are kind of hard to catch sometimes.
So I will set some more stuff out if it persists.
You have to get something the ants will give to each other and carry back to the nest to kill the queen or you can't get rid of them very easily.
Food grade diatomaceous earth is supposed to work, better than trying to burn them and yourself. If they are fire ants, it's worse of course. I saw a video of pouring molten aluminum in the nest. We don't have those where I am thankfully.
Thank you for your post - you had me laughing with all your descriptions!
Get some con syrup and mix a little borax into it. Add a little water to reduce the surface tension and put dab of it onto wax paper or a bit of plastic or anything handy, then set it where the ant trail is.
They will drink it and carry it back to the queen, and kill them in short order. A big nest may require refills because they drink it pretty fast. Just don’t put it out where kids or pets can get to it.
Save your money- a bottle of corn syrup and a box of borax will eliminate your ant problems for the next fifty years.
