Kids Create Salt Black Markets in Cafeterias Due to Michelle Obama’s Lunch Rules

Children are creating their own black markets to trade and sell salt due to First Lady Michelle Obama’s school lunch rules.

During a hearing before the House, a school administrator told Congress of the “unintended consequences” of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.

“Perhaps the most colorful example in my district is that students have been caught bringing–and even selling–salt, pepper, and sugar in school to add taste to perceived bland and tasteless cafeteria food,” said John S. Payne.

“Students are avoiding cafeteria food,” Payne said. “More students bring their lunch, and a few parents even ‘check out’ their child from campus, taking them to a local fast-food restaurant or home for lunch.”

Payne also said school fundraisers like bake sales, have been canceled due to the rules, and “whole-grain items and most of the broccoli end up in the trash” in his district.

Dr. Lynn Harvey agreed that the whole-grain requirement is not working, as kids refuse to eat dense and dry biscuits, and “unpalatable” grits.

“When it comes to whole grain-rich variations of biscuits, grits, crackers and cornbread, all too often, students simply toss them into the trash cans,” said Harvey, who serves as chief of school nutrition services at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, which oversees lunch programs for schools that enroll 1.5 million students.

“This product dissatisfaction has contributed to a decline in breakfast participation in 60 percent of North Carolina’s school districts,” she said.

Someone posted a Sidwell school menu here. It looked like the menu from a first class restaurant.
That tray looks like something you might get in prison. Those are your tax dollars.

George Orwell defined “power” (political) as “... the ability to make others suffer.”

I have made this point before. The new rules have changed school cooks into school defrosters. Because the federal rules require strict adherence to things such as fat/sodium grams per serving, schools have to basically buy prepared lunch and breakfast items. The school-food distribution companies do all of the measuring and paperwork to allow compliance. Some things can be tasty (eg breakfast pizza) and some rather tasteless (eg lunch pizza).

Most public schools have contracts with food distributors who are making good money by following the rules and producing food that gets thrown away. I am sure that someone who follows the money trail will find lots of hands on the local, state and national levels skimming money off of this deal.

What happened to the lib panic over the supposed running out of landfill space? (I know that was 10-15 crises ago, but try to remember).

Moochelle is not being a responsible parent. Children must be required to eat the lunch provided. They cannot be allowed to waste nutritional food especially prepared to insure their health and well being.

I used to save fast-food salt packets for my kids when they were in junior high.

What they did with them after that ... I know nothing ... I know nothing!

Michelle evidently failed to ask herself, “Would I eat that crap?” before she foisted it upon the kids. That would seem to be the logical way to go about it.

It really doesn’t matter how nutritious a meal is if the kids won’t eat it.

Strangely, that's still among list of worries conflicting my sis, the social worker. "We don't have room for all the Pampers!" is still among the laments I hear when we visit. I'm preparing myself for some re-cycled Paul Ehrlich -- "We're destroying the environment...and we're all gonna die." -- this summer.

She believes all that $hit.

Might not be a problem. Smart local hog farmers can offer to haul off the garbage (assuming the hogs will eat it).

What type of nutritional training does the moocher have? The Sasquatch diet is completely different than human requirements.
