Seattle's mayor unveils rainbow crosswalks painted on Capitol Hill

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray unveiled rainbow crosswalks in the Capitol Hill neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

The Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reports the LGBTQ community has been working on the symbolic effort for years.

The rainbows were installed Monday night at six intersections on Pine and Pike streets.

The city said the project cost about $66,000. The crosswalks are expected to last three to five years, but the city said it plans to maintain them for years to come.

SDOT spokesperson Rick Sheridan said the work was paid for primarily using Street Use fees, which come from developers using the public right of way.

"SDOT typically reinvests the funds in neighborhoods that are experiencing development and where the fees are being generated," Sheridan said.

I’d cross the street somewhere else if I lived there.

It breaks down like this:

$800 for labor
$2200 for paint and supplies
$63,000 for kickbacks.

Someone will paint it over with a confederate flag. Can’t wait till that happens.

That paint looks really shiny. I’ll bet they did not use proper pavement marking paint to make those, and that they will be slicker than snot on a brass doorknob when they are wet.

I wonder how many motorcyclists will be injured or killed trying to ride a bike across one of them in the rain - not to mention pedestrians slipping and falling.

It never rains or drizzles in Seattle /s

Might be amusing to watch the greenie bicyclists take a tumble, though.

I find that offensive and DEMAND it be removed!

That sodomite flag was STOLEN from Christianity and is an insult to my religion and is a symbol of hatred of people of faith!

crosswalks painted to promote a recreational sex practice.

wife swapper crosswalk.

bondage crosswalk.

animal sex crosswalk.

BTW did anyone tell these rocket scientists the act of stepping on a symbol is considered a show of contempt to the symbol.

also, that paint looks slippery and dangerous for cars and people.

They mark their territory with rainbow paint, but we can’t have the ten commandments in a courthouse?

There is no way the painted X-walk will last 5 years. I could see that if they used thermoplastic (heat applied and melted onto the street) strips but the water based paints they are required to use will scrub right off within a year.

As for cost it was probably based on the time to tape off for each color and relocate several times. Something like this: 6 intersections X 4 - 6 color striped X-walks per intersection. Since these were custom colors the chances of having 6 different color pots on one truck were pretty slim. Most traffic painting trucks (white and yellow paint) are equipped with only one pot (requires cleaning to place a different color) or 2 pots, so the contractor would have to rinse and clean between colors.
