Why Dogs Are Better Than Cats
Real Clear Science ^

Posted on 06/19/2015 8:10:41 AM PDT by Altariel

Here are five (mostly) scientific reasons why dogs trump cats.

1. Exercise motivation

While dogs demand physical and recreational activity, all cats demand is food and a comfy sofa to sleep on all day. Great job being a role model, Felix!

****

2. Give the elderly a purpose

Pets are wonderful stress relievers for people of all ages, but the elderly in particular benefit from owning a dog.

****

3. Sniff Out Cancer

Cats have an attuned sense of smell, but they're difficult to train. The top cats also can't match the top dogs nose for nose.

****

4. Smarter

Cats have more neurons in their brains than dogs, but by most accounts, dogs put theirs to better use, performing tasks like leading the blind or locating survivors of a disaster.

****

5. Stronger Bond with Humans

Cats can be just as affectionate as dogs, but there's little question that the bond between a dog and its owner is stronger.

We recently converted two indoor cats(when living with another family) to outdoor cats. They don’t wander. One of them has befriended a box turtle and they hang out doing weed together. The other is fascinated by moles and spends the day looking for them.

Not if they go outside. In any case it’s better than scooping it off the lawn.

See...that’s just what I mean...and they’re much Happier I think.

My outdoor cat hangs out on the deck and deck steps and occasionally wanders the neighborhood. Having watched how he navigates I was astounded to see him head toward crossing the street and actually stopped and looked for traffic, which isn’t much here...but still he looks.

He’s Big Tabby cat and very territorial.

The houses in my neighborhood are pretty far apart as we live in a mountain bordering the National Forest(same mountain where Audie Murphy was killed). The cats have pretty far to roam without encountering a house.

We took him and the rest of the kids to our new place
on the river. He’s gone now, figured he was around 18 years old. Great cat.

“Not a fan of small yippy barking dogs.”

My four pound Yorkie, Prissy, doesn’t yap like some small dogs. She is quiet unless there is something going on outside, then her bark is a real bark that means “go look”, something is happening.

Years ago, I had a friend who had a Pomeranian small dog and that dog would yap constantly and bite at the legs of anyone who came in. That friend would not control that dog. If I had that dog, it would conform to good behavior as I would not have allowed that behavior.

Nobody will ever love you as much as a dog will. The dog is the only creature on earth that will love you more than it loves itself.

Lock your spouse and your dog in the trunk of your car for an hour, and then open it back up... and see which one is happy to see you.

Lock a cat in a trunk for any length of time (13 seconds or 13 hours), and when you open it, they will either run from you at 70 mph, or will lay in the trunk as if it doesn't matter that you opened it. Your existence, in both cases, is irrelevant.

Most dogs, no matter how large, will want nothing but love and friendship from you. A cat, if it is large enough, will have no qualms about toying with its owner for an hour and then tearing your head off, for its own amusement. They are practiced and aloof killers, who love their craft. (They're also soft and furry and feel nice to pet... but that changes none of my previous statements.)

I thought about trying that once...
