To All Soccer Fans: American soccer is on fire

These are good times for United States national soccer teams of all genders and ages.

1. The U.S. women's team is on top of Group D (the Group of Death!) in the Women's World Cup after a 3-1 win over Australia. The USWNT is still one of the tournament's two big favorites.

2. The U.S. men's team just beat Germany (the reigning World Cup champions and No. 1-ranked team in the world) and the Netherlands (the team that finished 3rd at the World Cup) on the road in the same week, scoring six goals in the process.

3. The U.S. men's under-20 team is into the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup after beating Colombia 1-0 in the Round of 16. With a win over Serbia in the quarterfinal, it'll be the farthest a U.S. youth team has been in the tournament since they finished fourth in 1989.

That this on-field success is coming on the heels of the U.S. Department of Justice finally hammering FIFA officials with corruption charges after years of rumors and speculation only makes it sweeter. Depending how the three teams finish in the Women's World Cup, Concacaf Gold Cup, and U-20 World Cup, respectively, we could be on track for a landmark summer for American soccer.

I am with you and would rather go to work than watch a soccer match.

You sit there for 90 minutes watching 250 (or more) changes of possession while somebody accidentally gets in the accidental right spot to accidentally kick the ball into the goal accidentally. Then, when this accidental goal happens, you get to slide on the grass on your knees for 10 feet with your arms raised as if you did something tremendous rather than accidentally.

I've always wanted to see what the "coach" of all this mayhem actually tells the players during time outs. What the hell does he actually draw on his clipboard when the game after all is the occasional product of someone being in the right place at the right time, and doing whatever that feat is maybe once or twice in 90 minutes?

Do they actually pay the coach? And if so, why or for what?

FOX had a brief series about a US detective working the UK. One story line was an escaped convict leaving a trail of alive but injured people. He escaped to go the big match, and somebody had swiped his tickets, and he was simply following the trail.

At the end, the detective is at the game, handcuffed to the guy, everybody's cheering at the match, and the US detective is bored out of his mind.

I think it was called Keen Eddie. Sienna Miller provided the ongoing eye-candy as the house mate.

Excellent comeback.

I’d say the same applies to baseball and golf (not a sport, just glorified game), basically.

Is the fire contributing to Global Warming? Don't waste any water on it. There is a drought in CA you know.

Ummmm....just so you know....there are no time outs in soccer...I have officiated both soccer and football at the highest levels, and I will tell you soccer is much more of a demand than most people think. Having said that, I also understand that it is like watching paint for most. But if you really know the game, you understand why it is called the beautiful sport. I would personally much rather watch an American Football Game, however...

Personally I think soccer would greatly benefit just from reducing the field size, at least to our football size. It is way too big and allows far too much freedom for the few players on it to stop action.

The should eliminate offside rule, that would transform the game to faster, more goals game.
World’s most popular game/sport finally catching up in US.
“Football” played with hands, injury maker, union screwed is on the way out.
GO USA!!! Great US Chicks!

Accidental goals? Eh, will have to tell David Beckham about that and all of those goals he has hit into the net from a fixed position in the field.

I think I watched an accidental no-hitter once, none of those up at bat could hit the ball that the pitcher just happened to throw.

I think I watched Tom Brady accidentally throw the ball which was accidentally caught by the receiver and accidentally resulted in a touchdown.

Please!

Come back to me when the US Men’s team can actually win a group and advance to the the Quarter-Finals of a World cup.

Friendlies at the end of a very long and tiring season with half of the regular starters off the field never count. If the US was grouped with South American teams for WCQ, they’d never even make the big show.

Even detractors of soccer have to admit, all things being equal, it’s a sport dominated somewhat by whites versus American professional basketball and the NFL. So in fact, anyone can play the sport, not necessarily being about who is tall and who is strong:

And the last 3 World Cup champions, Germany, Spain, Italy.

On another thread, someone said that to an illiterate, words are just scribbles. As for coaches in soccer, I seem to remember Jerry Jones attaching himself to the hip of the Special One, Jose Mourinho, when the Cowboys were in London.

Soccer is making some converts in the US and here on FR.

We expect push back. It’s fun to read these posts, but they are ineffective; since there’s nothing new.
