Astronomers - what the heck?
self

Posted on 06/07/2015 2:49:48 AM PDT by djf

OK. Tonight I go on my porch and gaze at the night sky.

I have to move around a bit because there are trees everywhere.

But I see a BRIGHT object - almost directly west of me, and it's getting ready to set. It's right on the ecliptic.

The only two objects that ever get that bright are Jupiter and Venus, but it wasn't Jupiter, and at 11:30 at night, it sure ain't Venus!

Any ideas? Seriously. This has been buggin the crap out of me!

Don’t worry, you will find out on Independence Day and nobody will really miss Seattle anyway.

I’ve been wondering, when exactly do we catch up with Star Trek and Blade Runner and all that stuff?

We're only 4 years away. Where are the Blade Runner "Spinners" (flying cars)?

It is Venus

“Our sister planet appears at its best for 2015 in June and July alongside a notable planetary companion, Jupiter.”

Simple solution at a most useful site - Go to http://www.heavens-above.com/ . Plug in your coordinates. Scroll down to and click “Sky Chart.” Type in the date and time of your observation. It will give you the entire view of the sky from your location at that time so you should be able to determine what you saw.

Haa, haa... you might be in luck, caught this snippet off of the interwebs.

The Last Starfighter, 1984’s cult-classic science fiction film, may receive a sequel more than thirty years after its release.

According to the film’s original screenwriter, Jonathan Betuel, he is hard at work on crafting another installment for The Last Straighter.

I was on my dock last night fishing. The sky was on fire. Walleye were hitting hard and the stars had even more of my attention. North of Traverse City.

Living near Seattle you aren’t used to having clear skies, so you’ve never seen Venus above the horizon that late in the evening.

It’s either Planet X or a ‘57 Chevy with a head light out.

On the ground.

Are they seriously making a Blade Runner 2? It’ll be a piece of crap unless Ridley Scott does it, but, even if he does do it, it still proves that Hollywood is all out of original movies.

Years ago I heard a lecture by a scholar about the ancient Athenian calendar, which was a lunar calendar. It was obvious from what he said that the man did not realize that the moon is sometimes visible in the daytime. The man was a tenured full professor at one of the top universities in the US, in his 50s, a Rhodes Scholar with a Ph.D. from Harvard.

Yes, I talked to him after his talk. A few days later I saw him outdoors on a clear day looking for the moon. I guess he wanted to find out if I was right. I have had occasional contact with him over the years (mostly by email) but haven’t asked him if he has ever seen the moon in the daytime.
