Nazis served kohlrabi to American POWs

First Lady Michelle Obama is growing German turnips in the White House garden, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

Mrs. Obama offered students visiting the White House this week a “healthy meal,” which her anti-obesity group Let’s Move claimed was “harvested from the Kitchen Garden [Wednesday] morning.”

What I despise about Moochelle is that she’s giving veggies a bad name.

Kohlrabi is an odd looking but very tasty veggie. I love it shredded in a slaw and have a whole bunch growing in garden right now. And kale - one of my favorite, now hated because of her.

Food hipsters... you know, the people who have to be eating something you’ve probably never heard of because you’re not as hip as them. They also can be identified by their habit of giving restaurants everyone else likes one star reviews on Yelp, because they wouldn’t put avocado on their burger or some such nonsense.

but regular turnips are delicious cooked in beef broth and served with plenty of hot sauce.

Unless you are Jewish, you should try cooking them with fatback. And chopped up with the greens.

Michelle is “growing them” in the sense that she went out to the garden once and walked by them on her way to a limo and a Culver’s better butter burger.

I do share her concern for healthy eating (and I have a physique much like hers, evidencing at least a LOT of eating...healthy or otherwise)

but REALLY...how many kids want a diet of Turnips?!

(And who elected her as our childrens’ dietician, anyway!? For goodness sakes!)

One thing I will add ... my grandfather went on a Turnip Diet (don’t ask me, he just seemed to know about this)... and he lost a whole LOT of weight..... I doubt it was really healthy (certainly he wasn’t getting a ‘balanced diet” except when a turnip stood still, balanced on the table without rolling off to the floor). So I cannot recommend this approach to anyone. And everyone else got sick of turnips being boiled morning noon and night.
But anyway, he lost about 50 pounds or so.... so at least for him it worked.

don’t try any such diet without an OK from your MD, please.
I post it only for entertainment.

Turnips work pretty well mashed like potatoes. A little sour cream, a little dairy butter, a little horseradish. Throw some fresh grated parmesan on top, makes a nice side out of an unloved, fairly cheap vegetable that keeps well.

Rostkartoffeln mit Ei ist auch sehr gut. Ganz zu schweigen von Weinerschniztel mit Spaetzele. Fügen Sie ein Glas Bier und es ist perfekt!

(Rostkartoffeln with Egg is also very good. Not to mention weinerschniztel with spaetzele. Add a glass of beer and it is perfect!-for the non-German speakers)

What’s wrong with kohlrabi? It’s a cruciferous vegetable, and one of only two vegetables native to Northern Europe. (With Brussels Sprouts)

I do miss living in Germany and German food; kartoffelklossen (potato dumplings) was one of my favs.

Although I was able to find a Knorr variety here stateside.

“Could you define foodie? Really.”

A foodie is a person who likes to pay extremely ridiculous amounts for really krappy tasting food. They are the people who eat Kale, Arugula, Turnips, Beets and pay $20 for a teeny tiny plate of it. They are also the people who go to bars and pay $12 for a Pabst Blue Ribbon (not kidding, it is all the rage in hipster bars)

I love Kohlrabi. I was born and raised in Germany but my mother never made it. Turnips are yuck.

Kohlrabi come in 2 colors Very light green and purple

They can be eaten cooked or raw

While turnips come in white with pinkish top
