Squirrel-Bird Feeder Prevention 101

My Dad's been experimenting with ways to prevent squirrels from accessing his bird feeder. Mounting it in another place would be too easy.

Any other ideas?

“A large, hungry tom cat might help”

Ever seen a hungry tom cat leap for a bird?

I can get it at a Wildbird Food store in 20 pound sacks for under $30 and I found a 10pound sack at a hardware store. With only birds eating it really last a long time and we have a lot of birds. You might find that it is more economical than you think. Those pesky squirrels really don't like it.

We used to put out 2 hummingbird feeders but it was too many birds for us. So now we just put out one and every year I watch the online migration map. It's fun to see them coming up from down south. The map is here -

http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

They have shown up as early as March 1 and late as mid May. When they first arrive if the feeder is not out many don't survive because they are so tired and hungry (west Michigan where it can still be pretty cold at night when they get here). I put our feeder our about a week before the map shows them getting here.

The Gamo Varminter is a great air rifle. It shoots a raptor pellet at the same velocity as a .22. That is a little bit noisy but not bad. Then it shoots a regular pellet and with those its pretty quiet. Mine came with a scope, laser and flashlight.

With the bottom of the bird-feeder 6 feet up and at least 10 feet away from anything squirrels can jump from, I have yet to see a squirrel on my feeders over the past 10+ years.

(product page at "backyardwildbirds.com")

Deer on the other hand, will dance around on their hind legs to stand up tall enough to lick the birdseed out. I haven't figured out how to defeat that...
