Lubbock Women Attacked by Mosquito Swarm
KCBD ^ | May 22, 2015 | Ashlyn Tubbs

A hike at Ransom Canyon turned serious for two Lubbock women on Monday when they were attacked by a swarm of mosquitoes.

Carrie Shores and Megan Raden are Texas Tech students who just wanted to enjoy the outdoors with their friends when mosquitoes that "looked like flies" began to bite them.

The mosquitoes continued to bite them even as they were running; including bites on their faces. They were still a distance away from their vehicles, and both said the mosquitoes did not stop chasing them until they reached a residential area where officials spray repellent.

Once Shores and Raden returned to their Lubbock home, they decided to get pens out to circle the bites on their bodies.

Shores had a "very unlucky" amount of 124 bites, mostly on her legs. Raden had 81, mostly on her arms since she wore a tank top that day. The roommates had to purchase Benadryl and cortisone cream to relive their intense itching.

Shores and Raden both admit they did not wear mosquito repellent that day, because Shores had been to Ransom Canyon the week before and did not notice a mosquito problem.

But now the women said they learned their lesson and have a bottle of repellent in their back yard as a precaution.

I live in rural NW Florida. Mosquitoes are not a problem. I will see a few over the entire Summer but never a swarm.

The only thing which bothers me here are what I call dog flies. If I walk around the yard, one will often buzz around my head.

I can keep them away by spraying the top of a boonie hat with insecticide containing pyrethrin or permethrin and wearing it.

Actually, the Republican River merges with the Smoky Hill River at Junction City (hence the name) to form the Kansas River.

Northern Michigan deer flys can be really bad. They leave big ole welts.

I think the worst thing is yellow flies. I remember one bit me on the leg when I was sitting on the porch at my Aunt’s house.

It really hurt and just kept on hurting in addition to itching. Actually now that I think about it, I have not seen a single mosquito this year.

Man! How did I not know that?! I used to walk down to the river as a kid, almost directly across from the airfield.

I just looked it up. Ransom Canyon is not far from Lubbock but there is water there.

Not exactly what the Chamber of Commerce wants to publicize.

Totally unrelated, I hope:

Genetically-modified mosquitoes might save thousands of human lives, but is the risk too high?

I think the worst thing is yellow flies.

Aggressive suckers too. They don't let up until they get a bite outta you or you kill them. And that itching, burning welt they leave sticks around as a reminder for a few days.

Gotta love Florida.

I just changed 2 tires and gave at least a pint of Hemo in the process, but hell it stopped raining and it was a job to be done and couldn’t put it off any longer, they were just as bad when it was raining.

Lil buggers are brutal this year.

TT

PS When standing in line at Tractor Supply we were all swatting and clapping then as well :^)

Yellow flies — hate them, not as much as sweat bees but close. I keep some hen turkeys around to hang out with us when we BBQ because hen turkeys love to eat yellow flies and they are fast enough to catch them.

Yellow flies are attracted to moving blue objects so don’t wear blue.... some folks paint a blue bucket with tanglefoot [a sticky substance from the lawn and garden center] and mount that bucket on a stick attached to their lawn tractors....catches a lot of the bastards when mowing.
