Mexico and the United States have the highest rates of obesity of any major country in the world, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
But Mexico has been taking steps to change that. "In the United States, we think we're the first to do everything, but that's not necessarily true," says Kelly Brownell, dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. "And in the case of policies, to address the obesity problem, there are other countries that have been out of the gate earlier than we have."
Mexico is one of the first countries to adopt a tax on sugary beverages, a ban on junk food advertisement during kids' shows and movies, and a push towards healthier food in schools. But Franco Sassi, senior health economist at the OECD, says it is difficult to specify exactly what constitutes a "healthy food."
When it comes to obesity, there is no single food and policy that can tip the scales by itself, Sassi says.

In the end taxation is about revenue for politicians to play with not about any high moral purpose like fighting the evils of cigarette smoking or fatty foods.
I guess the corrupt politicos of Mexico were able to hustle their people to the envy of the political class in this country.

All these steps...and Mexico is more obese than ever.
I think it’s kind of the opposite. The people who move here are motivated. The people who stay are the least likely to battle corruption.
We learned that oh so well in the 1990’s with El Rushbo on the radio.
The demonization of cigarettes was a vehicle to extract money from the ciggy industry in the lawsuit going on then to line the pockets of governments and trial lawyers who make big political contributions.
It also enables politicians to raise taxes on cigarettes.
David Cameron in the UK demonized alcohol in recent years with a push for more alcohol taxes there.
That’s the interesting question — has it helped?
Of course for liberals it doesn’t matter. They’re just happy to see a government find a new way to boss people around.
I say Bull$#!+. Most of the Mexicans who come here illegally are small and thin from a lifetime of inferior peasant food. Once they get here, some of them bloat up by over-indulging in heavy American foods and abundant sweet goodies. But contrary to your indoctrination, most Americans are not overweight or obese. Only about 10% are.
And why would you pay attention to “the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development” anyway? Who are these clowns? Have you ever heard of them? They can’t even spell the word “Organization” right.
