I’ve read of such here in the USA. Early Mountain men used to tell of the “tar spring” near the original Fort Hall Idaho. They often would set it on fire just to watch it burn.

And in all seriousness, I find these natural petroleum seeps fascinating. I’ve done some flying around Santa Barbara (CA) ... the natural gas seeps off shore make some really spectacular disturbances in the water. Probably can’t see them from the beach, but from the air the patches of fizzy water are really striking.

The first oil well drilled in California was in Humboldt County in 1865. There were natural seeps used by the Indians for who knows how long.
