FULL TITLE: 'It's fear of autism': Fellow passenger says she SUPPORTS plane decision to kick off little girl and family as United refuse to apologize and mother calls for action
A controversial decision by a United Airlines pilot to make an emergency landing to remove a family because their autistic daughter was being 'disruptive' has received support from at least one passenger onboard.
The airline has so far refused to apologise over the May 5 incident which saw Dr Donna Beegle, her husband, son and their 15-year-old daughter Juliette removed during an emergency stop in Salt Lake City as they flew on a connecting flight from Houston to Portland.
Now passenger Marilyn Hedlund has spoken out to voice her support for the airline which is being threatened with a discrimination lawsuit by Beegle.
Hedlund told KOIN6 that the 16-year-old girl wasn't removed because she has autism but because her behavior threatened the safety of everyone onboard the plane.
'She wasn't put off the plane because she had autism, she was put off the plane because she was maybe proposing some kind of a threat, to (about) 170 other people at 36,000 feet, which doesn't make anyone feel safe,' Hedlund said.
'What if she got crazy and got up and opened an exit door at 36,000 feet?'
She praised the flight attendants for how they had been working quietly with the family for nearly an hour before the pilot made the decision to make an emergency landing.
'There was a lot of howling, and we thought well, what's going on? And it never stopped,' Hedlund said.

Sometimes when I’m out (anywhere) it’s hard not to notice. A lot of parents just ignore their baby/toddler when it’s crying, thrust me it gets very annoying quickly. Trust me, I have seen adults go on talking like nothing was wrong and the baby is screaming bloody murder there beside them. When a parent is at least trying it helps, it is common courtesy and others around are less to pass judgement.
Hidden in the story is the nugget that the cabin crew spent an hour trying to contain this situation. Enough is enough. Captain makes the call. Support the captain.
Right. Airplane staff are possessed. They are the evil one who should be put of the planes and forced to live with the pervert TSA agents for the rest of their lives.
The mother was trying to manipulate the flight crew and told them if howling daughter didn’t get hot food from first class she was going to scratch someone.
Some people should not be allowed to fly, this girl is one of them.
“The mother was trying to manipulate the flight crew and told them if howling daughter didnt get hot food from first class she was going to scratch someone.”
I don’t fly, TSA molesting people is one main reason, but I have to ask a few question for those who do....
Do they not serve hot food in coach? If they don’t can’t one order it and pay for it out of first class?
Seems when I watch tv shows in the 50’s people always were served food by the Stewardess in coach. Are those days gone?
It’s the Daily Mail. Sensationalism and titillating headlines.
Euro-trash.
No, except on most international flights.
If they dont cant one order it and pay for it out of first class?
No, based on the length of the flight, they will sell a variety of cold snacks in coach. Most folks pick something up at the airport and pack it on. The snacks that they sell are priced in the same range of the food you can buy inside of security. Typical captive audience prices. Sit near the front of the plane for the best selection.
Exactly. “Little girl” hardly describes a teen seriously acting out.
Then again, it’s the British press. anything to sell a paper!
My autistic son’s IQ is 127. The only “tard” here is you. STFU and go harass a donor for posting a blog fragment.
It is impossible for a person to open an airliner door at 36,000 feet.
We have an autistic boy at my school. He can get very violent. He's destroyed school property (expensive property), thrown sharp objects at other students, hit and punched and kicked teachers, pulled off all his clothes and had a screaming fit... it's frightening. And the bigger he gets, the more frightening it is.
Exactly. The girl couldn't know what was being served in first class but mama wanted first class food. Mama lost the law suit by admitting the girl could quickly get out of control and harm another passenger. Right there is enough to kick them off the plane before one or more passengers are scratched and multiple law suits are filed.
...decision to kick off little girl and family....

Let’s see, is she a little girl? Is she 15? Is she 16? She is described as each of these in this stupid article. And 2 people wrote it!
What if she turned into a big green monster and tore the plane apart? Huh? What then Mr Science and Facts Guy!
I was recently on a flight similar to this one.
Maybe even the same girl, don’t know.
But from the beginning of the take off roll, thru the whole flight, to the pull up to the gate, a teenage girl would scream uncontrollably.
There would be pauses of 10-20 minutes then a blood curdling scream, or two or ten. You never knew when it would start again or for how long it would go.
For hours.
I was about to crawl out of my skin by the end of the flight.
If I could have gotten off that flight, I would have opened the exit door myself!
That’s terrible. Passengers are in such close quarters on airplanes that calm behavior is really a must.
You really don't fly, do you?
“No, except on most international flights. “
My how the airlines have sunk in quality! I’ll go Amtrak.
“You really don’t fly, do you? “
NO! Like trains better anyway.
