Measles vaccine may protect against other diseases
cbs news ^ | 5-7-2015 | ap

A new study suggests the measles shot comes with a bonus: By preventing that disease, the vaccine may also help your body fight off other illnesses for years.

It's long been known that contracting measles weakens the immune system for weeks or months, putting people, especially children, at increased risk for potentially fatal infection by a host of germs.

Now, scientists find that this vulnerable period goes on much longer than thought, up to three years. So the benefit of avoiding measles also extends longer than was appreciated. Researchers also found that measles vaccination campaigns were followed by a drop in deaths for other infectious diseases.

Experts said the work is a wake-up call to parents who don't vaccinate their children out of unfounded fears about a link between vaccines and autism.

"The message is clear," said Dr. Richard Wenzel, an infectious disease specialist at Virginia Commonwealth University who was not involved in the study. Not only is the vaccine safe and effective against measles, he said, but it may also save a child's life by helping to guard against other infections.

Debate about the measles vaccine came into focus this year after a large outbreak tied to Disneyland sickened 147 people in the U.S., including 131 in California. Infections also spread to Mexico and Canada where 159 people fell ill in Quebec. Many stricken with measles were not immunized because of personal reasons or their age.

Anti-vaccinations are ya? Are YOU vaccinated ? Are you old enough to have not been vaccinated against measles, mumps, chicken pox, and polio ? If you are one of those who erroneously believes that vaccinations cause autism, then please explain WHY and HOW there were so many autistic kids PRIOR to the new vaccinations.

Are you anti-gassing? Have you been gassed? Why or why not?

Straw man ( re the stupid "gassing" ) argument that is completely specious and off topic.

Are you afraid to answer MY questions ?

Gassing is IDENTICAL to vaccination.

And your questions are irrelevent to the topic and merely an Alinskyeque attempt to personalize an attack and wreck the thread.

Once again, are you against gassing, per se, as a METHOD by which the government may force you to accept drugs, chemicals or medications into your body? Simple question - yes or no?

I have no idea what that means. I am definitely not pro-vaccine, but I hate that the anti-vax people keep referring to that Italian case when they used the Wakefield paper as portion of their evidence. How can anyone take that seriously?

"Gassing" is NOT the same thing as vaccinations at all!

"Gassing" is a term for poisonous gasses used in warfare, killing others a la the Nazis; however, by truly stretching the point, could be used to cover what dentists do to a patient to put them out, instead of novocaine and going even father off the beaten path, to what was once used in childbirth. Not a one of those things has anything at all to do with the prevention of a person getting a dreaded disease.

ARE YOU VACCINATED ?

So I’ll just preface this by saying I’m really neither pro nor anti-vax. I find there is a lot of compelling evidence and reason to and not to vaccinate. So, in my reading it seems there are two kinds (and I’m stating this very simply) of autism; one that is more gut centered and one that is more brain centered. Some of the gut centered kids have improvement in their autism “symptoms” with certain changes in their diet. I have not read of anything that has shown improvements in the brain centered kids. So, could the increase in the numbers and types of vaccines be a reason that there seems to be an increase in the cases of autism? Is something in the vaccines, presumably the aluminum, affecting the gut and/or brain? I understand there have been studies on the safety of individual vaccines, but as far as I have read no safety studies on the combo vaccines, nor vaccinating for more than one disease at a time.

I’m keeping an eye on what’s going to happen with the couple of cases against Maerk that claim they’re 1) fudging the efficacy numbers on their MMR vaccine and 2) fudging the numbers on their autism study.

If an aerosol inhaler is your idea of gassing then I am not opposed.

If nitrous oxide as a means of sedation is gassing I am not opposed.

You need to be specific.

You seem to be intentionally vague.

There are NOT, now, more cases of autism than there were prior to the newer vaccinations ! The ONLY reason that people believe/think that this is something "new", now, is because a while back a bunch of Hollywerid people's kids had it and they went nutso; especially McCarthy.

Back in the mid 1960s and before, there were many cases of autism and there were tons of papers and books written on this topic. Surprise, surprise, even back then, one of the possible causes was said to be older fathers.....which has, of late, been brought to the fore once again.

Also, autism has now been stretched to cover some rather "normal" behaviors.

Hmmm, do you have a link to the info about there not being more cases of autism now? Everything I’ve read explains this away as there being a broader definition of what autism is now than there was in the past.

Thimerisol has not been used in children’s vaccines since 2001, other than the flu shots, yet the rate of “autism has supposedly gone up. The accepted number ten years ago was one in 164, I think now I’m hearing like one in88 children are autistic. I guess soon the autistic kids will be in the majority and won’t have anything to worry about.

Gassing is a method of delivering chemicals and/or biologicals. You mistake the historical misuse of this method for the method itself.

As for your screaming insistence that I provide you with personal medical information, the answer is that you have no power, right, morality or any other justification to demand such a thing - and you know it. Not to mention that you are merely a screen name on the internet. For all I know, you’re a dog. After all, you’re behaving like one.

What you are actually doing, however, is refusing to acknowledge that “vaccination” is a term for a delivery mechanism, and that each and every vaccination delivers different substances under different conditions. The reason you don’t want to acknowledge such a simple, obvious fact is that you represent powers that want such specificity ignored, so that individual vaccines are not taken on their own merits.

And the reason such powers want that, is so that they can hire thugs to scream the absolutely meaningless, totally slave-based question, “ARE YOU VACCINATED?” at people, in exactly the same way that every totalitarian power has ever screamed compliance commands at its slaves.

Needless to say, I consider you the absolute opposite of the principles upon which America was founded - and that’s not even counting the vaccination issue.

Enjoy your thirty pieces of silver.

My point is that the term "vaccine" is intentionally vague, and only becomes specific when the actual content and conditions of a specific vaccine used for a specific purpose towards a specific population in a specific way is addressed.

However, as you don't seem to want to acknowledge that simple, obvious point, and as I have no interest in your agreement, it seems we're done here.

If you want to believe the Wakefield paper - and all of its references - was withdrawn without compulsion, threats and/or payoffs from the trillion-dollar vaccine industry, be my guest.

But I advise you to stay away from people selling bridges.

Interesting piece of common sense legislation working its way thru the Maine legislature:

LD 950; Right to refuse vaccinations:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a person, employer or educational institution may not discriminate against an individual because that individual has refused a vaccination.

summary

This bill prohibits discrimination against an individual who refuses a vaccination.

Damn...a bill that everybody can read and understand...

Do you think you’ll convince anyone with a paper that, regardless of the circumstances surrounding why it was withdrawn was withdrawn nonetheless, everyone knows has been withdrawn or thinks has been discredited?

It's written, so technically it's libel, but in any case I have not stated anything that is untrue with the exception that there is possibility that my opinion that you are indeed trying to sway opinions on the topic is incorrect. But, since it is only my opinion that doesn't really matter.

There's no hit and run about it. Was the Italian courts decision based, at least partially, on the Wakefield paper? Yes. Was the Wakefield paper retracted? Yes. Does citing a retracted paper lend toward the person or entity doing the citing being disregarded because, well, they're citing a retracted paper? Yes. Has it been proven in a court a law or anywhere else that the paper was retracted under duress or coercion? No. Where's the dishonesty?
