'Driving drunk woo ...' woman texted before fatal crash

A Miami woman charged with DUI manslaughter allegedly texted her boyfriend "Drunk driving woo" just minutes before a fatal collision that killed her passenger.

Mila Dago had been fighting with her boyfriend and sending him a barrage of breakup texts in the early hours of Aug. 14, 2013, according to documents released by the prosecution on Thursday.

The last three messages, minutes before the fatal crash, were "Driving drunk woo," "I'll be dead thanks to you," and "Lata."

Then, according to the Miami Herald, she blew through a red light and T-boned a moving truck with her rented Smart car, killing friend and passenger Irina Reinoso, 22.

She had a blood-alcohol level of .178, more than twice the legal limit, two hours later, police said.

Dago, 24, has pleaded not guilty to DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide and two counts of DUI with damage to a person

Defence lawyer David Rothman told the Herald it would be "disrespectful" to Reinoso's family to comment.

Seems like the charges should be upgraded to 1st degree murder; intent shown in the text by ‘I'll be dead’ and ‘lata.’

I blew past a Smart Car in my Peterbilt at +70 mph. I honestly thought that car was going to be sucked under my trailer. The driver had her hands full trying to keep that thing on the road, the turbulence was that strong. They are definitely not road cruisers.

The first thing the police check in an accident scene is if any texting was done by the driver(s).

They are barely acceptable in the suburbs, let alone the open road. Really an inner-city only car.

Do they burn well?

Charge her with murder.

She set out to cause damage. She did.

If you want to kill yourself using an automobile that does not include your garage or other enclosed space..

The smart car is the smart choice for a collision death.

They are tough cars that transfer all the crash impact through the body of the car and up the seat in to you.

You however do NOT take a crash well and the end result is death. (normally)

I cannot imagine a Smart car being stable over about 50 mph with the short wheelbase it has.

I’m not sure if he couldn’t go at a speed keeping up with the flow of traffic at 65 MPH or that he just chose not to do so (i.e. some greenie idiot who thinks that driving slow saves fuel and thus “saves the planet” even if it impedes the flow of traffic and creates a dangerous condition as other drivers try to pass), but yes, to me it didn’t look like a vehicle that I would want to dive or be in, on a major interstate highway.

Here’s an interesting report on the death rate per million miles by make and model. This is info usually buried because it confirms what common sense might tell you. (I don’t see Smart cars among the worst, but I haven’t looked for a reason):

I had the joy many years ago of driving a dune buggy rail that had about the same wheelbase as a Smart. It was a hand-full to keep stable at 55mph. It was easy to see how a little wiggle could cause it to get squirrely real fast.

It scared me as a 17yo kid!

Jumping rice canal bridges at 100mph in a longer wheelbase almost race-ready rail was fun however. I saw the tops of the trees! Nice flat trajectory.

Skimming the article it looks to have been published before the introduction of the smart car. but it confirms what we know. The smaller the car thd more likely u will die.
