Is nonconformity and freethinking a mental illness? According to the newest edition of the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), it certainly is. The manual identifies a new mental illness called “oppositional defiant disorder” or ODD. Defined as an “ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior,” symptoms include questioning authority, negativity, defiance, argumentativeness, and being easily annoyed.

What do Freepers think of Free Thinking?

Opening paragraph from the Wikipedia entry:

"Freethought (also spelled free thought[1]) is a philosophical viewpoint which holds that positions regarding truth should be formed on the basis of logic, reason, and empiricism, rather than authority, tradition, or other dogmas. The cognitive application of freethought is known as "freethinking", and practitioners of freethought are known as 'freethinkers'."

No.

But when you apply logic to people who call themselves "free thinkers" they tend to scream like little girls would saw a spider.

The Daignostician’s Manual took homosexuality off the their list of disorders because the homos threatened the psychiatrists and the APA gave in because of their cowardice. The psychiatrists conducted a vote to take homosexuality off the list of disorders. A vote is not the way science is supposed to be conducted.

I daresay that if a Republican occupied the White House, free thinking (i.e., vigorously and vocally opposing said Republican’s policies) would be viewed as a sign of mental health.

This is a bull puckie article. ODD is sociopathy redefined. The writer is fear mongering.

So this is now a mental illness and homosexuality is no longer one.
Terrific.

I’ve looked through about a half dozen other articles about this and none have gone past the DSM heading to explain what it takes to get these diagnoses. Is ODD a diagnosis of free thinking or of stubborn opposition to any authority where the patient would walk into traffic just because he had been told not to do it? Similarly one other diagnosis is “above average creativity”. Lots of comments criticizing it, but no one printed the definition. Is it diagnosed as a flaw or merely a definition like “genius” might be? Also is it referring to someone like Mozart or the Clintons because they have an unusual amount of creativity in giving explanations about why bribes paid to their foundation aren’t really bribes.

So called “experts”. These folk cannot discern the difference between their derriere and a hole in the ground.

What passes for “free thinking” today excludes common sense, reason and logic.

The problem is ...logic dictates, reason dictates... they have they have there own natural authority...there the root of natural law...so you can’t be in rebellion against the authority of logic and reason and be an free thinker anarchist at the same time

The goal is to make all of us mentally ill and in need of control for our own good.
