Missouri town responds to officer exodus after election of black female mayor

A small city in Missouri caught national attention when roughly half of its employees resigned following the election of its first African-American female mayor.

Many news outlets and bloggers have speculated that racism and sexism drove the exodus in Parma, a city of about 700 near the Mississippi River; whereas several residents say other factors were at play.

Mayor Tyus Byrd, 40, who beat longtime incumbent Randall Ramsey, has not yet released a formal statement on the controversy, but did address it briefly after being sworn in last week.

“Moving forward, I’ll get with the board. I’ll speak here in a little bit,” she told KFVS-TV, “and we’ll talk and discuss those issues that have taken place today. And we’ll try to get things in order for the city.”

From yesterday’s article, she’s a Republican and the police may be scattering because of some scandals.

Thanks for that. I suspected there was more than Racism involved. But Wait!!!! You mean the black person that the cops are leaving for is a Republican? That means... the cops that are quitting must be democrats. And since this is obviously racism, the democrats hate black people. Right? Is that the proper liberal spin and attack?

I might have to follow this and dig into it a little. This could be juicy.

“If she had let it be known that she was going to fire everyone in order to make her administration “more inclusive” then yes, if I were an employee there, I would quit.”

So many here seem to be missing the fact that she’s a Republican, in a town run for 37 years by the same demo mayor!

I have read that she is a REPUBLICAN. and why would some city with a population of 700 need so many cops! Even our small burg only had a night cop back when it was less than 1000!

Well it's understandable, considering that the media has gone out of their way to NOT mention that fact.

Oddly enough I'm reminded of the comments of Monica Conyers some years ago who stated that contractors who "don't look like us" need not bid on jobs in Detroit.

Obviously, racism and sexism drove the election of the black, female candidate with no qualifications other than her family members had had previous run-ins with the local law enforcement.

"Byrd served as city clerk in the past. She was born and raised in Parma and also does missionary work."

Small town with something over 700 population. Whites outnumber
blacks about 2 to 1. Probably a case of time to clean out the rats nest.

Of course, 6 police for a town of 700 does seem a high number. Not if they run in three shifts.

To be honest, you did.

You did not say “perhaps she is incompetent”.

You SAID “perhaps they KNEW she was incompetent”

English structure of that sentence implies that she IS incompetent, and the question is whether they knew it or not.

“Perhaps they THOUGHT she was incompetent” might have gotten your meaning across, if you actually were just suggesting they quit because they thought she was incompetent, and not making an assumption of your own based on the headline of the article and perceptions of race and sex in typical city elections.

Yesterday a thread posted several times that she is a Republican, and speculated that the long time mayor may have been up to his elbows in cronyism and corruption. They speculated that’s why those who had been getting favors and cash were leaving. I don’t know if this is true, and in my town, the mayor’s race is run without parties- not Dem or GOP.

Another good reason to quit and beneficial to the new mayor. As a Republican she probably would bring herself a surfeit of lawsuits from whomever she did fire and she would need a different set of bureaucrats if she means to damp down the corruption.

I suspect that this thread was started by some orthopedic surgeon who was looking for work, i.e., replacing all those knees that have been worn out from all this jerking. Has anyone asked how many of the town’s employees who resigned were white? Did she campaign on a platform of reform by cleaning out the waste and corruption? Did the mostly white residents vote for her in large numbers? Is this just an example of anti-democrat sentiment that’s popping up the last couple of years?

I have defended FR against a lot of criticism that everyone on here is just an old, white, rascist, red neck, knuckle dragging idiot. Some days it seems those critics might have a point. Get a grip, people.

They may have knee-jerked, but they were going by the picture the media was painting....”Racist whites don’t want to work for black mayor” was the narrative they wanted to put out.

I suspect that she is going to get rid of the police dept and turn over the policing to the county as it should have been a long time ago. It may be that the hiring of 6 police officers was a large part of the corruption.

There is absolutely no reason for any small town to have 1 police officer per 100 residents. None.

Egads, the grammar and hidden-meaning police are alive and well on FR.

I sincerely apologize for my mis-wording of above said statement and promise better grammar in the future. Amen. :-)

My question would be, why does a city of 700 people need 6 cops. in fact, why do they need any cops?
