Sorry , a watch that cannot function as a watch will NEVER make sense, a watch cannot run out of juice everyday, it’s a MAJOR FAIL... the iPhone can successfully make and receive phone calls... they are essentially the same device but the “watch” isn’t ready for primetime... The original iPhone wasn’t ready for primetime either but it had enough potential in the largely useless non-phone/”internet enabled computing device” functionality that people could excuse the lapses.

Please explain to me how a one inch by one inch screen will ever be usable for any function ... will you be able to edit a document on it? Will you ever be able to read a map on a screen that size? Will you even be able to read a text message? Can you name ANY app out of the “thousand or so” that you mention that will ever be usable on this tiny screen? The answer is NO ... That means that this is not only NOT a watch , it isn’t what we now consider to be a phone (meaning a smart phone) , it is fashion and nothing more... and fashion goes out of fashion. If it ever morphs into something truly usable, a “Dick Tracy” phone ,,, say with a long battery life , usability without being tethered to a mothership iPhone and native GSM phone capability then it deserves a look.

Perhaps it’ll be useful by the 3rd generation or so.

The last keynote at Apple pretty well illustrated how useful and functional the Apple Watch is. Take a look at that on the Apple website. You’ll see some good examples of what you can do.

As far as a “watch function” ... my desktop computer has a watch function on it. My iPad has a watch function on it. My iPhone has a watch function on it. AND ... an Apple Watch has a watch function on it, too.

BUT ... if you think the Apple Watch is a “watch” ... you are not going to “get it”!

You obviously never used the iPhone when it came out. . . and it was so far beyond anything that existed at the time it was truly a new paradigm in phones. You show by your comment above you don't have a clue what you are talking about when you say the iPhone "was not ready for prime time" when it became the prime time.

As for the rest of your screed. . . you are criticizing something you haven't touched, tried on, or probably even seen in person. . . and you are talking through your hat. You have no experience at all to claim what you are claiming. . . especially when people who wrote reviews who HAD used the Apple Watch disagree with you strongly. . . and say it CAN do the things you say are impossible. You are literally ignorance on parade when it comes to the Apple Watch. . . and you keep at it, far beyond your use by date.

Helps if you actually know what you’re talking about.

The clock function is powered different from the other apps: there’s a power reserve mode to ensure you can still check the time & get alarms for days, even when there isn’t enough power for ongoing app use. Heh...I _wish_ the iPhone had a similar function, reserving power for phone calls so the camera wouldn’t suck the battery completely dry. People bitched about having to recharge smartphones daily when they were used to going weeks between plug-ins, now daily charge is the norm precisely because people discovered smartphones are so d@mn useful.

I’ve used an Apple Watch. Small, yes, but quite useable. No, you’re not going to edit documents on it...but it WILL take dictation. Yes, you can read a map on it; maybe not for when you need a big spread to check a wide area, but fine for navigation when you want flick-of-the-wrist visibility and not have to fumble with a phone or tablet (or [gasp] paper). Yes, you can read a text message; it’s a “retina” screen and very clear (your eyesight may vary). Apps usable on this tiny screen? I’ll be extending mine to it once I finish this next release.

Of course, over time the battery life will improve, computing power & efficiency will improve, a camera will be added (hello, Dick Tracy!), and it will pair with more devices and become more independent.

I’ve been following the developments in computing technology for 40 years. Every single time, people like you spew vitriol about how dumb & wasteful the next development is ... and then they get sucked into using it, just like everyone else, because it proves useful & cost-effective after all. We’ve been trying to get “smart watches” usable for decades, and Apple finally made it happen.

Check https://www.apple.com/watch/app-store-apps/ for a long list of apps for the Watch. Hardly comprehensive, does give a good sense of what kinds of things people will be doing with theirs.
