These kids are white. Would there be as much controversy if they were black?.........

Apparently the school district there will provide bussing to school if the children live more that a mile from the school, otherwise they have to walk.

So they can walk alone to school at age 5 or 6, but not that age with an older sibling going home from a park.

Someone give these poor folks a job outside of the People’s Republic of Maryland, please. Help them escape the nanny state ghetto.

Barring that, they should move an hour and a half west. I spent a few formative years in the mountains of Allegheny Co. MD. My parents had no idea what mountain top we were on or what valley we were skulking through.

The gov. employees should do time for kidnapping.

That would be serial kidnapping.

I realize that the do-gooders in this story are sincerely interested in the welfare of the kids

I don't buy that. Either a busybody or someone with grudge against the parents.

Well I don’t disagree with you. Didn’t the parents call CPS or was it a nosey neighbor? I don’t remember as the story changes as we go along. Regardless the kids are back in their parents arms hopefully forever. I think they are Democrats and hope they change their minds and become Republicans after this.

It would be nice if they became conservative. And realized that almost all Dems are statists, and lots of Republicans are, too.

40-50 years ago, this was absolutely normal and expected behavior. And some studies have shown that crimes against children have actually gone down on a per-person basis. But technology and information sharing has gone up, magnifying it. There are also twice as many people in the US (or even more) than when I was growing up. So, twice as many crimes would be an identical crime rate.

I assure you, my parents would definitely be in prison and I would have grown up in a foster home under these PC conditions. How do children learn to grow up? Anecdotal evidence shows that, basically, they don’t.

“That would be serial kidnapping.”

...the penalties for which are especially harsh to this day due to the Lindbergh case, and no bedwetters have ever dared to lessen them.

“It is my firm opinion that being over protective and not allowing the children to learn independence and responsibility leads to them becoming adults who have no common sense. They really think the world should be perfectly safe, and are willing to sue if it isn’t. “

+1

Age 10 is not too young to look after a sibling while having fun at the park.<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Not in the days I grew up, 50’s-60’s, no it wasn’t. I now have two younger grandsons who are 6 & 10. In the case in the news, I believe the 10 year old is a girl, and they are usually more mature than boys at that age.

We have a park around the block from us, the same one I played in growing up. My husband walks the dog over there and lets the boys “range” all they want, but he is keeping an eye, mostly from afar. When I grew up only the neighborhood kids played in the park, and everyone knew everyone. And at 10 we were quite self-sufficient. Strangers stuck out like a sore thumb, and in any event, we rode our bikes all over town.

Now, people come to our town from many miles away to use our parks. Even the neighborhood kids don’t know each other like they once did, as they often attend magnet programs at schools across town.

Different time, different place now. Our 10 year old grandson loves his little brother dearly, but would gladly sell him to the highest bidder at times. I’d rather both kids just played, had fun, and they don’t seem to mind Grandpa or Dad or their 16 year old cousin being in the vicinity. They are gradually gaining more independence as time goes by.

Of course, we didn’t have 24/7 news channel either...so we didn’t hear about kidnapping everyday...

I was a “free-free-free range child” and the product of a healthy dose of benign neglect.
I got some imagination out of it that I hung on to

I too was a big time free ranger! I walked a half mile to school in Iowa (Des Moines) when I was 5 years old, even in winter. We played outside after school and in the summer without adult supervision. When I was 8 I was free to ride my bicycle far and wide without adult supervision. Obviously the leftist nanny-staters have learned to use child protection services to their advantage in wrecking control on the family.

Note, my parents were ‘controlling’. Others had much more ‘free ranger freedom’ than I had.

In their state, the law says that someone under 8 has to be left with someone who is at least 13. The parents don’t like it, but it’s the law.

If it was an 8 year old and 10 year old, that would be a different story, but that isn’t the case and the parents were told of the law.

Normally I don’t like the govt. interfering, but the law is the law.

Get out much? Does the thought of passing someone on the street scare you into wet pants? You may be on the wrong site.

To answer all the insults here -
Yes, I’m effeminate as I am a female....
Yes, I do get out....
I am probably older than anyone posting to this thread....
I am a conservative....
I don’t believe in insulting people just because I disagree with them....
Where did any of you get the idea the story was about you and your experiences growing up?

For all of you posters who can’t get upset upon reading about an abducted child taking up days of 24 hour news cycles and later found murdered, check out the area from the December news about this same family and tell me these children are safe and the parents perfectly sane.

Not one of you bothered to check the December story to discover that these kids were not walking in a residential neighborhood at that time. We don’t have the details on the park they were in for this particular incident except they were still a mile from home.

The good Lord forbid, if something were to happen to these children and no one cared or showed any concern because the children were simply learning how to be independent, you’d all be on FR declaring the parents were neglectful and your parents would never have been that neglectful blah blah blah....

Are you folks too obtuse to understand that even ADULTS come up missing in this country?
