Early last fall I was sitting with my neighbors on their back patio and there were a number of smaller bald faced hornets on their wooden fence, stripping the wood then flying off. Evidently that's what they make their nests out of.

Anyway,I told my neighbors there was likely a nest within a 100 yards and that's where they were coming from and to look in the nearby trees to see if they could find it.

It wasn't until the cold weather set in and the trees lost all their leaves that they discovered a soccer ball sized nest in the small tree right on the side of their front room picture window.........

a soccer ball sized nest

I had one of those in a cedar tree in the back yard last summer. I figured I'd wait until winter and go back and get rid of it while they were hibernating. When I went to check on it, it had been ripped open and all the cells were empty. Kind of looked like woodpecker damage.
