I have a Rosa rugosa that is over 65 years old. Brought up from Chicago over 30 years ago. It’s huge.
Can anyone explain to me how sharing heirloom seeds could be a patent violation? By definition they have to have been around for 50 years or more.
Sharing seeds or replanting seeds from a hybrid doesn’t necessarily yield the same plant, so the issue there is the customer doesn’t really get what they may be expecting, if it is labeled with the same name as the hybrid.
But heirlooms are different. How about this: What if the neighbor and I just give each other a tomato. I’ll give him a Roma, and he gives me a Mortgage Lifter just to see if we like the flavor. Then we each eat the tomato we have been given, but scrape out the seeds and save them?
Who would even know, if we didn’t tell?
I’ll bet it is. We planted three in the S.West corner of our property. I think it’s beautiful, and love the rose hips. Japanese beetles love them to - the traps have been pretty effective at controlling them.
No moisture in the soil. Have got broccoli sets in pots on porch along with cayenne I have started from seeds. Am coaxing peppers along in the back.

Are you in one of the drought areas? I have had good production from pots of peppers and tomatoes. It seems like the peppers do better than the tomatoes.
I’m in the desert, my FRiend. Gardening is a fun challenge.

Ah yes! I was reading about another country where they only get one decent rainfall a year. They actually did a triple dig of the soil and of course amended it with compost, peat moss, and vermiculite and whatever.
Then they planted the crops, and didn’t water anymore the rest of the season. Then there was another one that used some sort of concrete trenches filled with soil, but I don’t remember the rest of that scenario.
I am always fascinated with the various ways different regions have come up with to deal with the water and bad soil issues. We have a lot of clay here and a few months of drought. So I did the sq. ft. garden and do some container gardens. Hubby made some raised beds and soil improvement.
I am thinking that I might do a small 3x4 area and do the triple dig thing and see what happens. A couple of my beds are pretty far from the house. It’s a hassle to even get the hose there, and it’s quicker just to carrying a 5 gallon bucket of rainwater there, but that’s a pain in the neck/back and arms. LOL
That rosebush is the only thing in my garden that those beetles like.
Please keep us detail posted on the hops, including pics if you can.
In other circumstances I might have grown hops here this year. What zone are you in again?
